FREDERICK, Md. –– The Carolina Mudcats fell to the Frederick Keys by a score of 7-3 on rainy Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. An unrelenting stream of hits from the Keys’ hitters paved the way for a quality home win for the team at the bottom of the Northern Division.

Frederick totaled sixteen hits off of five Carolina pitchers in just eight innings. Meanwhile, the Keys pitchers held the Mudcats to just three runs off of eight hits.

Dylan Bundy looked strong in 4.1 scoreless innings for the Keys. Bundy fanned seven Mudcats batters without allowing a walk. The Frederick starter gave up five hits but a stout defense and poised play kept the opposition from scoring.

Matt Hobgood (3-3, 4.78) earned the win after tossing 2.2 innings in which he allowed three earned runs off of just three hits.

The loss comes as the continuation of a recent trend for the Mudcats. Tuesday night’s defeat comes as the fifth straight for Manager Scooter Tucker’s team.

Frederick pounded Carolina starter Cole Sulser to build an early lead in the bottom of the third. Wynston Sawyerand John Ruettiger both singled to get the ball rolling for the Keys. Adrian Marin then doubled down the left field line to score both runners. Trey Mancini followed it up with a walk and a Chih-Hsien Chiang single on a sharp ground ball to right was enough to score Marin. Later in the inning, Jason Esposito plated Trey Mancini from third with a sac fly to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Sulser would give up another run as he continued to struggle in the bottom of the fifth. After Trey Mancini poked a single through the infield to reach base, a wild pitch moved the first baseman into scoring position. Chih-Hsien Chiang advanced Mancini with a groundout and a Jason Esposito single brought the run home, ending Sulser’s night.

The Keys hit Cole Sulser (4-10, 5.52) for ten hits and six earned runs in 4.1 innings. The right hander walked one batter and struck out two on his way to the loss.

Scooter Tucker elected to bring reliever Benny Suarez in from the bullpen but the right hander couldn’t stop the Keys. With Esposito at second after a Brenden Webb single, Wynston Sawyer knocked an RBI single to left that scored the second run of the inning.

Down by six runs, the Mudcats finally woke up to get two runs back in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Frederick pitcher Matt Hobgood hit Joe Sever and gave up a base hit to Todd Hankins. Carolina’s Alex Monsalve then scored both runners with his seventeenth double of the year to cut the lead to 6-2.

Carolina added another run in the top of the seventh to keep the end result in question. Logan Vick used a leadoff double to put the Mudcats in good shape. A ground out from Yhoxian Medina and another ground out from Yandy Diaz gave the athletic Vick the opportunity to scamper home.

The Mudcats appeared to have the momentum on their side but an extended delay in the eighth and ninth innings put the brakes on a comeback.

Carolina failed to score for the remainder of the game but Frederick added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Jerome Pena emphatically stamped the Key’s home win with a solo shot over the right field wall.

The game was called in the ninth inning due to persistent rain.

The Mudcats continue their series with the Frederick Keys on Wednesday. Carolina ace Ryan Merritt is set to battleParker Bridwell. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
