Peoria, IL -- The Lake County Captains were up 3-2 over the Peoria Chiefs when Thursday’s game was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning due to inclement weather.
The Captains saw action early on Thursday, with left fielder Logan Vick hitting a double in the first inning. Designated hitter Joe Sever brought home Vick on the Captains' next at-bat with a single on a grounder to right field.
The Chiefs came back strong to battle the Captains in the bottom of the first, taking the lead 2-1 by the end of the inning. Starting off with two singles from outfielder Charlie Tilson and shortstop Alex Mejia, third baseman Jacob Wilson sacrificed a bunt to move Tilson and Mejia up. Next up, infielder Patrick Wisdom doubled a line drive to left field to bring Tilson and Mejia home.
Both the Captains and the Chiefs saw little action in the third through seventh innings before both teams had pitching changes during the seventh. The Chiefs replaced Hector Hernandez with Dixon Llorens and the Captains put in D.J. Braun for Jake Sisco.
The Captains came back strong in the top of the eighth inning after first basemen Nellie Rodriguez struck out. Catcher Jeremy Lucas walked and stole second while Gonzalez was at-bat. After Lucas’ steal, Gonzalez tripled to right field, bringing Lucas home and putting the Captains up 3-2 over the Chiefs.
The bottom of the eighth inning began with Braun striking out Mejia, but a wild pitch moved Mejia to first. With Mejia on first and a 3-0 count on Lucas, the Captains and Chiefs went into a rain delay.
The Captains and Chiefs game was ultimately suspended due to the weather and is scheduled to be finished before the third game of the series, Friday’s regularly scheduled 12:00PM game.
