Captains top Silver Hawks 2-0 in 12, end 8-game skid

The Captains won their first extra inning game of the year to end their recent eight-game losing streak beating the South Bend Silver Hawks in twelve innings.

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Lake County Captains (6-17) broke the second eight-game losing streak of the season with a 2-0 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (14-9) in 12 innings on Sunday afternoon. The Captains won their first extra inning game of the year.

For the second time in three games, a South Bend starter took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

On Friday, Blake Perry no-hit the Captains until designated hitter Anthony Santander's two-out single ended the no-no. 

On Sunday, Arizona Diamondbacks 2013 first-round pick Aaron Blair kept the Captains hitless into the seventh inning. It was déjà vu as designated hitter Anthony Santander's two-out single broke the no-hitter.

Blair pitched seven one-hit innings with three walks and a season-high twelve strikeouts to keep the visitors on their toes.

Captains’ starter Caleb Hamrick made his best start of the year as he shut out the Silver Hawks over five and two thirds innings. He scattered three singles and four walks to keep South Bend scoreless, while fanning five.

The Captains bullpen of Jordan MilbrathWander Beras and Ben Heller combined to shutout South Bend over six and two thirds innings. The trio allowed only one hit and two walks with seven combined strikeouts. Beras earned the win, while Heller picked up the save.

The Captains scored two runs to take the game in the 12th inning. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez and Santander hit a single and double, respectively, off of South Bend reliever Jose JoseKyle Schepel came in and gave up two RBI singles to right fielder Josh McAdams and left fielder Cody Ferrell.

Jose gave up two runs on four hits in two innings to get the loss.

The Captains will return to the friendly confines of Classic Park on Monday night. The West Michigan Whitecaps will come to town for a four-game series. The Captains will start RHP Adam Plutko (0-0, 4.15) and West Michigan will counter with RHP Chad Green (0-0, 3.75). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
