EASTLAKE - The Captains and the Loons played a double header Saturday night, with The Captains taking both games with finals of 5-2 and 4-3. Both games played were seven innings with the second game being a makeup from a postponed game on April 19th

The first two and a half innings of game one were uneventful until second baseman Yhoxian Medina hit an infield single and then rounded to third on a single from left fielder Aaron Siliga. Third baseman Erik Gonzalez hit another single to bring Medina home and put The Captains up 1-0 over the Loons.

But the Loons didn’t allow that lead to stand for very long, coming back to score a run in the top of the fourth, tying the game up 1-1.

Medina and Sigila both all came back swinging in the bottom of the fifth inning though. A line drive triple from Medina started it off, and homers from Sigila and shortstop Dorsyss Paulino brought the Captains up to a 4-1 lead. That was Paulino’s first home run of the season.

Right fielder Joe Winker brought the Loons a run closer with a solo homer to start the sixth inning. But Captains catcher Eric Haase added a third homer to night, bringing the lead back up to 5-2 and the final margin.

“We gave ourselves a chance,” manager Scooter Tucker said. “You can’t win them all, but you’ve got to give yourself a chance, and they did tonight. They played well. I’m very happy with the way they played tonight.”

The start of game two was similar to game one, and there was not much action until the bottom of the second, with the Loons driving in a run first this time. The Captains continued to add errors on their season, allowing Great Lakes to score because of those errors.

But Lake County didn’t let Great Lakes keep that two run lead for very long. Catcher Jeremy Lucas homered to start the bottom of the second bringing the score to 2-1.

The third and fourth innings turned out to be much better for Lake County than Great Lakes, scoring one run in the third to tie up the game at 2-2, and scoring one more run in the fourth to take the 3-2 lead.

The Loons came back swinging in the sixth inning though, scoring one more to tie up the game again at 3-3.

But Siliga came through with a clutch hit as he brought right fielder Jorge Martinez home on a single to center field in the bottom of the sixth and putt the Captains up 4-3.

The Captains held off the Loons and captured the victory of game two with a final of 4-3. The sweep brings The Captains to 24-43 on the season and the Loons to 26-44.

The Captains and Loons are set to face off again on Sunday at 1:30pm in Classic Park.
