FORT WAYNE, IN- The Fort Wayne Tincaps (4-3) took advantage of three errors by the Lake County Captains (1-5) to build a 4-0 advantage before the skies opened up. The game was called after five and a half innings, giving Fort Wayne a 4-0 win. Lake County has dropped five straight ballgames.
The Padres’ 2011 first round draft pick, left-hander Joseph Ross (2-0, 0.0 ERA) made his second start of the 2013 season for the Tincaps as he took on right-hander Luis DeJesus (0-2, 3.48 ERA) for the Captains.
Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Dane Phillips led off the frame with a double to left field and took third after left fielder Jorge Martinez made a fielding error. First baseman Luis Tejada drove in Phillips, his first RBI of 2013, with a line drive single to center field.
The Captain's defense struggled in the fourth inning, allowing three more runs to score. Phillips reached on a bunt single to third base, followed by Gabriel Quintana advancing him to third on a fielding error by second baseman Robel Garcia. Tejada hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to score Phillips and ended the day with two RBI. Brian Adams put a double down the left field line to put two on with one out. Following a pop out, third baseman Erik Gonzalez made a fielding error, bringing home Quintana and Adams.
Ross completed five innings before he came out of the game, allowing one hit and one walk, both to Captains first baseman Nellie Rodriguez. He also struck out a season-high eight batters.
Right-hander Leonel Campos came in to relieve Ross in the sixth inning. Garcia walked to lead off the inning, then centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez singled to center field. A sacrifice fly moved Garcia to third base, but N. Rodriguez struck out to end the threat.
Following the top of the sixth inning, home plate umpire Nestor Ceja called for the tarp to be placed on the field. Following a 27 minute delay, the umpires called the game at 9:18 PM.
DeJesus took the loss, allowing four runs (all unearned) on five hits in five innings of work. He did not walk a batter and he struck out four.
Campos finished the game with a scoreless inning, despite the walk and single.
The Captains only had four people on base in the game on two hits and two walks.
The Captains will stay in Fort Wayne for game two of a four game series. Lake County will send LHP Ryan Merritt (0-1, 1.80) to the mound for the start and Fort Wayne will counter with LHP Max Fried (0-0, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM from Parkview Field.
