Captains shutout 4-0 after four-run first

June 24, 2012

FORT WAYNE, IN- The Fort Wayne Tincaps (2-0, 33-39) jumped to a four run lead early on the Lake County Captains (0-2, 31-40) and made it stick for a 4-0 win on Saturday night.

Lake County sent lefthander Elvis Araujo (2-6, 4.67) to the mound and the Tincaps greeted him rudely with a four run first inning. Shortstop Jace Peterson, centerfielder Donavan Tate, and designated hitter Mike Gallic opened the game with three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. First baseman Lee Orr coaxed a walk off of Araujo to score Peterson. Right fielder Yeison Asencio grounded out to score another run. Third baseman Duanel Jones lined a two out, two run single to center field. Jones was caught stealing second base to end the inning.

Araujo took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of work. He surrendered three walks and struck out six batters.

The Captains had the best chance to score a run in the sixth inning. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo singled to left field to leadoff the inning. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and moved to third base on a balk. With one out in the inning, the next two batters flew out to right field and shortstop, respectively. The Captains did not score the runner.

Tincaps’ starter Adys Portillo (5-4, 1.76) shutout the Captains on only three hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and retired four via the strikeout.

The Captains bullpen, Francisco Valera and Antwonie Hubbard, combined to throw 3.1 innings of perfect baseball in relief. Each reliever struck out one batter.

James Jones and Luis De La Cruz gave up only one hit and one walk over three scoreless innings of relief work.

The Captains only had four hits on the night. Castillo led the team with two hits. Catcher Alex Monsalve and first baseman Jerrud Sabourin each added a hit.

The Captains will conclude the three game series with Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field. Lake County will send RHP Joe Colon (5-7, 3.29) to the hill. The Tin Caps will counter with RHP Colin Rea (1-3, 2.61) who will get the start. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM.
