FORT WAYNE, IN - The Fort Wayne Tincaps (16-21) shutout the Lake County Captains (11-27) 7-0 in the rainy, middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday evening. The game featured a 77-minute rain delay in the middle of the fourth inning. Lake County has dropped three-straight games.

Fort Wayne jumped in front against Jordan Milbrath. Left fielder Ronnie Richardson was hit by a pitch and centerfielder Mallex Smith followed with a bunt single. Both runners scored on a two-run double by third baseman Dustin Peterson. Two groundouts later, Peterson crossed the plate to make it a 3-0 lead.

In the third inning, Fort Wayne added a run on a fielding error by second baseman Claudio Bautista. Fort Wayne held a 4-0 lead after three innings.

The Tincaps ended Milbrath’s night as they blew the game wide open with a three spot in the fourth. Designated hitter Dane Phillips led off with a triple to the right field gap. The next batter, First baseman Jake Bauers plated Phillips with a sacrifice fly. Milbrath walked the next batter before the skies opened up.

Home plate umpire Matt Winters called for the tarp as the game entered a one hour and 17 minute rain delay. Captains’ manager Mark Budzinski brought in reliever Ben Heller to pitch following the delay. After striking out the first batter, Heller served up a two-run homerun to second baseman Josh VanMeter.

Fort Wayne led 7-0 after four innings and that would be the final score.

Milbrath took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits in three and one third innings. He walked one and struck out one. Heller was charged with one run on one hit in two thirds of an inning.

Tincaps’ starter Kyle Lloyd went four shutout innings in his second start of the year. He scattered four hits, including two triples, to go along with five strikeouts. Tony Wieber followed with four innings of three-hit baseball to pick up the win.

The bright spot for the Captains was that Caleb Hamrick threw four scoreless innings to close out the game. He allowed two baserunners (hit and a walk) with three strikeouts.

Wilson Santos closed the game for the home team with a scoreless ninth inning.

Despite losing by seven runs, the Captains and Tincaps had seven hits each in the game. Catcher Eric Haase and right fielder Josh McAdams had two hits each. Third baseman Paul Hendrix extended his on-base streak to twenty games.

The Captains will look to avoid the sweep on Wednesday morning. Reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week and Indians Minor League Player of the Week Adam Plutko will take the mound against RHP Coby Cowgill for the Tincaps. First pitch is at 11:05 AM.
