MIDLAND, MI- The Great Lakes Loons (25-36, 61-70) held the Lake County Captains (34-27, 65-65) to six hits, all singles in the series opener on Saturday night. Lake County left 11 runners on base throughout the game. Lake County is still tied with Fort Wayne for the first wild-card position.
Great Lakes got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Jesus Arredondo doubled to right field, for the game’s first hit. Right fielder Joseph Winker shot a RBI single to left field. Left fielder Zach MacPhee bobbled the ball, allowing Arredondo to score.
The Loons added a run in the second for a 2-0 lead. Catcher Michael Pericht walked to lead off the inning. After a strikeout and lineout, a wild pitch by Captains’ starter Shawn Morimando (6-6, 3.76) moved Pericht to second base. Shortstop Darnell Sweeney followed with a RBI double to center field. Sweeney has 18 RBI’s on the year.
First baseman O’Koyea Dickson launched his sixteenth homerun of the year in the third, a solo shot to left field. The Loons had a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.
Righthander James Campbell made his first start (seventh appearance) for Great Lakes. He allowed two hits in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out three. Reliever Scott Griggs (1-0, 1.74) came in for the fourth inning.
Lake County loaded the bases on three walks while there were two outs in the inning. Shortstop Yhoxian Medina grounded out to end the threat.
Morimando was relieved after four innings. He surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out two. Joshua Nervis came in for the fifth inning. Nervis threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and three walks.
Griggs was taken out of the game following the sixth inning. He only allowed two hits in three innings of work. He walked a game high four batters. Craig Stem relieved him for the seventh inning.
Left-hander Kyle Petter retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning. Petter left with a suspected back injury. Manny Carmona came in and struck out the last batter in the eighth.
Stem picked up his first save with three scoreless innings. Stem followed the last two Loons pitchers with two hits allowed in three innings.
Centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez had three of the Captains’ six hits on Saturday night. Spots 2-5 accounted for all the of base hits.
The Captains will play the middle game of a four game series with the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday afternoon. The Captains will send LHP Danny Jimenez (2-3, 5.24) to the mound to face RHP Duke von Schamann (3-4, 3.34) for the Loons. Game time is scheduled for 2:05 PM from Dow Diamond.
