SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks (11-5, 51-34) withstood a late rally by the Lake County Captains (9-7, 36-50) in the eighth inning as the Silver Hawks took the middle game of the three game series 8-7 on Saturday night.

Dace Kime started the game for the Captains as he looked for his fourth straight win. He went up against RHP Sean Furney for South Bend. Furney was making his third start versus the Captains this year.

First baseman Nellie Rodriguez led off the second inning with a solo homerun to left field, his twelfth round-tripper of the year. Centerfielder Dorssys Paulino laced a one-out double to left field before scoring on a RBI double by catcher Richard Stock. Lake County led 2-0 in the second.

South Bend cut the lead in half with a run in the third. Third baseman Ryan Gebhardt singled but was erased on a groundout by centerfielder Breland Almadova. Almadova stole second base and scored on a RBI single by left fielder Chuck Taylor.

A three-run fourth inning gave the Silver Hawks a lead that they would not relinquish. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Catcher Michael Perez reached on a throwing error by Kime on a force attempt, bringing in a run. Gebhardt plated another run with a sacrifice fly to center field. The third run was scored on a fielder’s choice by Almadova.  South Bend held a 4-2 after four innings.

The Captains pulled within a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Rodriguez and left fielder Torsten Boss.

Kime took the loss with four runs allowed in five innings on four hits. He walked four and struck out six as he fell to 4-10 on the year. Alexis Paredes entered for the sixth inning.

Paredes walked the first two batters, leading to a RBI single by shortstop Andrew Velazquez. Taylor followed suit with a run-scoring single. Velazquez was thrown out at home by right fielder Jorge Martinez. Designated hitter Daniel Palka singled to move Taylor to third base before a passed ball by Stock scored Taylor. First baseman Marty Herum tripled home Palka for the final run of the inning. A four-run frame put South Bend in front by five.

Paredes was touched for four runs on four hits in two thirds of an inning. Ben Heller entered and struck out the last batter of the inning.

Furney improved to 2-1 against the Captains and 4-4 on the year with three runs given up in six innings. He allowed five hits, one walk and struck out two. Tom Jameson took over for the seventh inning and struck out two.

Lake County mounted the near-rally in the eighth inning. The first two batters walked before Rodriguez launched a three-run shot to left field. Rodriguez had two homers in the game and 13 overall. Boss doubled for the second time in the game, putting an end to Jameson’s night. Daniel Gibson entered with a runner in scoring position.

Two batters later, third baseman Grant Fink doubled home Boss to cut the lead to one. The Captains got one more hit in the inning but could not score the tying run.

Jameson allowed four runs on three hits in one plus innings of work. He walked two and fanned two. Gibson threw a scoreless inning of relief with two hits.

Heller threw a inning and a third of scoreless relief to bring his scoreless streak to 15 innings. Over his last 10 appearances, he has allowed five hits, four walks and 33 strikeouts.

Carlos Melo threw a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.

Silvino Bracho fanned two to pick up his sixteenth save of the year.

Lake County was led by Rodriguez, who had three hits in the game for the second time this year. Stock, Fink and Boss added two hits each.

The Captains will conclude a three game road series on Sunday afternoon in South Bend, Indiana. The Captains will send LHP Luis Lugo (5-7 5.15) to the mound to start the ballgame. The Silver Hawks will counter with RHP John Omahen (4-2, 3.00). First Pitch is at 7:35 PM from Four Winds Field.
