Captains offense shut down in 5-1 loss

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- The Lake County Captains (7-7, 38-45) could not muster close to any offense against the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-6, 44-40) as starter Marcelo Carreno (4-5, 3.32 ERA) shutout the Captains over seven innings and finished a 5-1 victory on Thursday night.
Righthander Cody Anderson (4-5, 3.11) started for Lake County and allowed the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Left fielder Jason Krizan walked and advanced to third on a single by right fielder Jeff McVaney. Designated hitter Pat Leyland grounded into a 6-3 double play that brought home Krizan.
Felix Sterling came in the fourth inning to relieve Anderson. Anderson took the loss, allowing one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Sterling allowed one run in the fourth. Krizan singled to center field, McVaney moved Krizan to second with a walk. Leyland could not move the runners over as he flew out to right field. Catcher Pratt Maggard singled to left field, plating Krizan for a 2-0 lead.
The Whitecaps scored three more runs in the fifth inning. Third baseman Edgar Corcino singled to leadoff the frame. Shortstop Eugenio Suarez moved Corcino to third with a single to right. After a flyout, Krizan laced a single to right field, allowing Corcino to score. Krizan had three hits on the night. McVaney grounded out to shortstop, bringing home Suarez. Leyland added a RBI with a single to right, scoring Krizan.
Sterling was replaced by Manuel Carmona in the sixth inning. Sterling allowed four runs on seven hits in two innings of relief work. He walked one and struck out two batters.
Carreno pitched seven shutout innings, giving up only three hits and two walks. He retired two batters with a strikeout.
Lake County was able to bring across a run in the eighth inning off of reliever Michael Torreabla. Catcher Patric Tolentino doubled to the right-center field gap. After a strikeout, second baseman Todd Hankins singled to center, moving Tolentino ninety feet up to third. Shortstop Francisco Lindor grounded out to first base, bringing home Tolentino to conclude the scoring.
Carmona and Jeff Johnson combined to shut down the Whitecaps over the final three innings. They allowed one hit and one walk. Each reliever struck out one batter each.
Torrealba allowed one run on two hits in the eighth inning. Jade Todd allowed two hits in the ninth but finished the inning unscathed.
A night after having 16 hits, Lake County only managed seven hits. Designated hitter Alex Lavisky had a 2-4 night to lead the team.
West Michigan and Lake County will conclude the three game series on Friday night. LHP Shawn Morimando (2-2, 3.93) will start for Lake County and RHP Jeff Ferrell (2-2, 4.70) will toe the rubber for West Michigan. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
