Captains Notebook: Vick's struggles continue at Lake County

Captains Notebook: Vick's struggles continue at Lake County

The Lake County Captains had a brief 3-1 week as the first half of the season came to a close. Overall, the first half has been tough for the squad as they post a league-worst 27-43 record and sit 14 games out of first place in the Eastern Division. Despite some severe offensive struggles, the team has boasted some bright spots, including a solid first half from pitcher Robbie Aviles and a breakout performance from infielder Paul Hendrix. Here’s how the past week went for the Captains, who will regroup to begin the second half of the season June 19.

Smooth Sailing

Clint Frazier, CF
4 G, 19 AB, .325 BA, 6 H, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7:0 K:BB

Clint Frazier crafted a nice week, despite it consisting only of four games. A home run and a triple were a nice addition, considering Frazier’s extra-base hits have been low this year. The second half of the season will be important for Frazier, who is in his first full season of professional ball. It’ll be interesting to see how he manages the lengthier year.

Dace KimeRHP
1 G, 6.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 9:1 K:BB

This was easily Kime’s best start of the year -- and it was his first win. Kime’s first half has been less than favorable, so it’s nice to see him end the first half on a high point. Hopefully he’s figuring things out so that he can save his season with a stronger second half.

Grant FinkINF
4 G, 16 AB, .379 BA, 6 H, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 5:1 K:BB

Fink caught fire to start the season, but the cool-down was ugly. Fink struggled through May as he hit just .202, so a solid final week in the first half is a bonus. Hopefully that success carries over after the all-star break so Fink will return to early-season form.

Walking the Plank

Jordan MilbrathRHP
1 G, 1 IP, 36.00, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 0:1 K:BB

Milbrath’s All-Star Game appearance wasn’t pretty, but luckily it didn’t count. Milbrath’s season started off stellar, but declined as the months carried on. It’ll be interesting to see if Milbrath can rebound and resurrect his season. His stuff was there early on, and opposing teams were overheard commenting on how effective he was, so there isn’t much doubt that there’s plenty of hope for his second half.

Logan VickOF
4 G, 19 AB, .113 BA, 2 H, 2 RBI, 4:1 K:BB

Vick’s return to Lake County has not worked in his favor, and the last week was a fairly accurate reflection of his performance. Vick began the season in high-A Carolina, where he hit and underwhelming .170 through 41 games.

All-Star Outings

Pitchers Robbie Aviles and Jordan Milbrath and catcher Eric Haase headed to Comstock Park, Michigan to represent the Captains in the 2014 Midwest League All-Star Game June 17. As previously mentioned, Milbrath pitched an inning, but struggled through it. Haase entered the game as a reserve and went 0-for-1. Aviles did not pitch. The Eastern Division team, which included the Captains, fell to the Western Division 7-0.

Boarding Ship

Anderson Polanco was assigned to the team from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers June 13. Polanco spent a brief eight games with the Captains last year, during which he posted a 5.02 ERA through 14.1 innings of work.

Leaving Port

No Captains were reassigned to other teams last week.

Taking On Water

Lefty reliever Matt Whitehouse was placed on the seven-day disabled list for a forearm strain on June 13.

On the Horizon

The second half of the season kicks off June 19 for the Captains at home for a four-game series with the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Captains will hit the road June 24 for three games with the Bowling Green Hot Rods and complete the road trip in Dayton for four games with the Dragons.
