Captains Notebook: Rodriguez is red hot with the bat

Captains Notebook: Rodriguez is red hot with the bat

The Captains had a rough week losing five in a row before winning on Wednesday night to finish the week 1-6. Some bats are starting to heat up (and some cool down) and the roster shuffling continues as players continue to come and go.

Smooth Sailing

Nellie Rodriguez, 1B
6 G, 26 AB, .406 BA, .406 OBP, .964 SLG, 1.370 OPS, 11 H, 2 2B, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 8 R, 6:0 K:BB

Rodriguez has had a monster week and here’s hoping this continues through the remainder of the season. Most notable is the power he’s displayed, something that was nearly absent during his 2013 run with the Captains. The only concern here is the lack of walks compared to his strikeouts, but to be fair, that’ll happen with a power-hitting first baseman.

Torsten Boss, INF
5 G, 15 AB, .267 BA, .423 OBP, .867 SLG, 1.290 OPS, 4 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 4 R, 3:3 K:BB

Boss hasn’t necessarily hit for average this year, but he’s displayed some outstanding power, including a home run that surpassed the Captains’ field house in right field. Boss has hit three home runs over his past seven games and none of them were cheap. Boss is 23, and he started the year at the high-A level, so perhaps he’ll find his way back there if he can hit for average as well.

Justin Brantley, RHP
2 G, 1-0, 4.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 1 H, 7:0 K:BB

Brantley has given up one run through eight appearances this season. That run took form as a solo home run in his first ever professional appearance. Since then, Brantley has been lights out. His fastball sits about 92-93 mph, despite him being a fairly small guy at 5-foot-10. Brantley is 23 years old, an age that some may consider old for the low-A level, but he’s also brand new to the realm of professional ball.

Walking the Plank

Luis Lugo, LHP
1 G, 0-0, 4.1 IP, 12.46 ERA, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 6:4 K:BB

Lugo’s rough patch continued June 6, marking four straight shaky starts for the tall lefty. Lugo has seemed to find consistency for a few games at a time before he struggles for another few. Late May and early June were solid, but now he continues to have trouble locating his fastball.

Alexis Paredes, RHP
1 G, 0-0, 0.2 IP, 54.00 ERA, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 0:2 K:BB

The season has not been kind to Paredes, who has failed to find consistency. Six appearances in June went well for Paredes, as he posted a 3.68 that month, but May and July have been ugly. Paredes, 22, has been around since 2010, so unless the Indians see something in him that the stats don’t reflect, he may be facing the end of the road.

Taking On Water

No Captains were added to the disabled list. Robbie AvilesKenny MathewsAnthony Santander and Matt Whitehouse all remain on the 7-day disabled list.

Leaving Port

Reliever Ben Heller was promoted to the high-A Carolina Mudcats. Heller posted a 2.43 ERA and 64:16 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 37 innings in 28 appearances.

Boarding Ship

Right-hander Justin Garcia was promoted from the short-season Mahoning Valley Scrappers to replace Heller. Garcia was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA and 10:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 15 innings of work with the Scrappers.

On the Horizon

The Captains complete a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts July 11 before the Great Lakes Loons come to town for a four-game set.
