Captains Notebook: Lugo, Bautista starting to heat up

Captains Notebook: Lugo, Bautista starting to heat up

The Lake County Captains posted a 2-5 week, but some close games at least kept the games interesting. The offense remains underwhelming as infielder Paul Hendrix is the only player hitting above .300. The team failed to produce any runs in three of its losses last week, and its two wins were one-run games. The loss of Adam Plutko, was was promoted to high-A Carolina, creates a void in the starting rotation, and also puts some pressure on the bullpen, considering Plutko led the starters in innings pitched.

While the remainder of the arms remain inconsistent, the team will have to find a way to compensate the loss of one its better starters. Here's the week that went down for the Captains.

Smooth Sailing

Luis Lugo, RHP
1 G, 5 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3:3 K:BB

Lugo has had an up-down season, though a rough start hasn’t helped his statline. A trio of poor outings in early April hurt Lugo’s numbers, and since then, his outings have been inconsistent. He’s tossed three scoreless outings since April 25, but he’s also had a couple bad outings since then. May 27 was Lugo’s first hitless outing, so perhaps he’s turning a corner.

Claudio Bautista, INF
5 G, 18 AB, .283 BA, .283 OBP, .350 SLG, .634 OPS, 5 H, 2 RBI, 1 R, 3:0 K:BB

Bautista has been on a complete tear the last 10 games. Since May 18, he’s hit .432 and logged a 1.096 OPS. The only standing concern regarding Bautista is his lack of walks. He’s drawn one walk the last 10 games and just eight the entire season.

Trevor Frank, RHP
2 G, 2.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3:0 K:BB

Frank had one rough outing on May 8 and since then, he’s been lights out. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in five outings and didn’t allow a hit during his last two. The right-hander has also logged three saves this season and established himself as one of the bullpen’s most reliable relievers.

Walking the Plank

Clint Frazier, CF
7 G, 26 AB, .164 BA, .221 OBP, .164 SLG, .350 OPS, 4 H, 1 R, 1 RBI, 10:2 K:BB

Expectations for Frazier were high and he’s held his own. That said, he’s struggled as of late. He’s hitting .167 over his last 10 games and has not drawn many walks. Overall, Frazier’s hitting .234 on the year with one home run. He said he’s trying to focus on becoming a complete player rather than hitting for power, so perhaps the lack of home runs is simply part of the process the Indians organization has set for him.

Matt Whitehouse, LHP
1 G, 1.2 IP, 16.20 ERA, 7 R, 3 ER, 9 H, 1:0 K:BB

Whitehouse’s woes continued May 25. He was credited with the blown save, his third of the year, and eventually took the loss. Inconsistency has plagued Whitehouse this season, which is reflected in his 6.08 overall ERA. Control doesn’t appear to be his problem as he’s only walked five this year, but but opponents are hitting .314 against him.

Nellie Rodriguez, 1B
6 G, 20 AB, .083 BA, .180 OBP, .083 SLG, .264 OPS, 2 H, 2 R, 2 RBI, 5:2 K:BB

After a nice start to the season, Rodriguez’s numbers have regressed. It’s been 10 games since he’s hit a home run, but more concerning is he went seven straight games without an extra-base hit. As a player with power expectations, hopefully Rodriguez racks up some more bases.

Boarding Ship

Infielder Torsten Boss was assigned to the Captains roster from the high-A Carolina MudCats May 27. Boss hit .188 through 27 games with the MudCats.

Leaving Port

After he was assigned to the Captains roster May 24, catcher Shane Rowland was reassigned to the short-season Mahoning Valley Scrappers May 28.

Starter Adam Plutko was promoted to Carolina May 28. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.93 ERA and 66:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 52.2 innings of work with the Captains.

Taking On Water

Outfielder Cody Ferrell was placed on the 7-day disabled list May 25 with a groin strain. Reliever Kenny Mathews remains on the 7-day disabled list as well.

On the Horizon

The Captains complete a three-game series at home with the South Bend Silver Hawks before they hit the road for Great Lakes to face the Loons in a three-game set. They'll enjoy an off-day June 3 before hosting the Fort Wayne TinCaps for the first half of a six-game homestand.
