Captains Notebook: Hendrix, Aviles continue to lead the team

Captains Notebook: Hendrix, Aviles continue to lead the team

Perhaps it was the warm weather, or perhaps things are just starting to click, but last week seemed to be a nice improvement for the Lake County Captains. The team went 5-2, stringing together a three-game win streak the past three days. The bullpen has offered some nice outings and the offense has collectively picked itself up. Here's what happened during the Captains' previous week:

Smooth Sailing

Claudio Bautista, INF
7 G, 54 AB, 11 H, .424 BA, .424 OBP, .745 SLG, 1.169 OPS, 3 R, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 3:1 K:BB

Bautista had a monster week that was topped off by a walk-off single May 20. Bautista had a solid start to the season that tailed off, and now it seems he’s found an effective approach again. He hasn’t had a day off since May 14, and it seems he’s a guy manager Mark Budzinski prefers to have in the lineup.

Paul Hendrix, INF
7 G, 55 AB, 10 H, .321 BA, .421 OBP, .457 SLG, .879 OPS, 4 R, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 12:3 K:BB

Hendrix seems to be comfortable hanging out in the Smooth Sailing section each week, and he seems even more comfortable at the plate. It’d be nice to see his walks catch up a little to his strikeouts, but that’s a feeble complaint, considering he’s getting on base.

Robbie Aviles, RHP
2 G, 15 IP, 1.93 ERA, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 HR, 7:0 K:BB

Though his outing on May 21 was actually his worst of the year (and it wasn’t even that bad, as he allowed three earned runs on six hits in seven innings), it’s tough to ignore the start Aviles crafted May 16. That day, Aviles tossed six hitless, scoreless innings for the Captains, notching him the honor of Indians Minor League Player of the Week. Aviles’ has made arguably the best turnaround of any player on the Captains’ roster this season, so it’ll be interesting to see how he maintains his success.

Walking the Plank

Caleb Hamrick, RHP
1 G, 1.1 IP, 33.75 ERA, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 H, 0:3 K:BB

Hamrick has been one of the more inconsistent arms in the Captains’ rotation and his May 18 outing was not one of his best. Hamrick tossed zeroes across the board in his previous outing May 13, but his collective stats for the season aren’t favorable as he posts a 7.56 ERA and has walked nearly as much many as he’s struck out (20:19 K:BB).

Jordan Milbrath, RHP
1 G, 4 IP, 9.00 ERA, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 1:3 K:BB

It’s tough to pick on Milbrath given the stellar start he had this season, but his last two outings have been less than favorable. While two bad outings are nothing to throw in the towel over, his start on May 18 included a season-high three walks.

Boarding Ship

The departure of Dorssys Paulino was short-lived. The former shortstop returned to extended spring training in Arizona May 5 and returned May 19. Paulino has made a position change to the outfield and has played three games in left field since his return. He has yet to commit any errors there, a sharp contrast from the team-leading 13 he made at shortstop.

Reliever Matt Whitehouse was reassigned to the Captains roster after a temporary paper move that placed him on the Scrappers roster May 4.

Leaving Port

Outfielder Josh McAdams was reassigned to the short-season Mahoning Valley Scrappers roster. McAdams has struggled offensively this year, posting a .198 average with 43 strikeouts and six walks through 101 at-bats.

Right-hander Luis DeJesus was also reassigned to the Mahoning Valley roster. DeJesus made two appearances for the Captains and posted a 21.60 ERA, surrendering four earned runs on three hits, one home run, two walks and three strikeouts through 1.2 innings.

Catcher Eric Haase hasn't left, but he wasn't in the lineup May 20-21 due to the birth of his first child.

Taking On Water

Lefty Kenny Mathews remains on the 7-day disabled list.

On the Horizon

The Captains hit the road again for a brief three-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods. They’ll return May 25 for a six-game homestand with the Great Lakes Loons and South Bend Silver Hawks.

I could see Hendrix getting moved to Carolina if he continues at this rate for another month or so. Moving him to 2nd or 3rd being a definite possibility.

I don't see Gonzalez being pushed to Akron anytime soon. Plus he is hurt right now.

I guess when Lindor moves up to Columbus, Gonzalez to Akron than I guess Hendrix would get hi shot in Carolina. The wild card is if they move Ronny Rodriquez back to SS from 3B.

Walter - Hendrix will be best served by staying in Lake County. Erik Gonzalez and Todd Hankins are the middle infield duo in Carolina and the two best players on the team possibly. Gonzalez is on the DL at the moment though so maybe Hendrix could go up temporarily..

At the moment Hendrix, Plutko and Aviles should be under consideration to be promoted to Carolina in the near future.
