Captains Notebook: Haase, Brantley continue to lead team

The Lake County Captains picked up five straight wins this week as the team's offense has suddenly come to life. They remain 6 1/2 games back in the second half playoff race, though the first place West Michigan Whitecaps have already clinched a spot. Sitting just 2 1/2 games behind the second place South Bend Silver Hawks, the Captains are still playing meaningful baseball. Here's the highlights of the past week:

Smooth Sailing

Ivan Castillo, INF
5 G, 12-for-25, .362 SLG, .290 OBP, .653 OPS, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, 4:1 K:BB

Castillo caught fire over his last 10 games, totaling a .349 average since Aug. 1. This is Castillo’s first season in low-A ball, so it’s nice to see him adjusting down the final stretch. Though he may not be a true prospect, he has the opportunity to craft a nice career as a organizational infielder by filling in wherever he’s needed.

Eric Haase, C
4 G, 6-for-17, .514 SLG, .338 OBP, .852 OPS, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 R, 2:3 K:BB

Haase has hit .350 through his last 10 games, so it’s probably no surprise the Captains have been winning. Haase’s bat has been one of the driving forces behind the team’s offense and it’s nice to see him finishing strong. It’s a shame Haase hasn’t received a shot at the Carolina League yet, but he’s certainly proven he can handle low-A ball.

Justin Brantley, RHP
2 G, 3.2 IP, 1-0, 0.84 ERA, 0 ER, 1 H, 7:1 K:BB

A glance at Brantley’s ERA pretty much sums up the year he’s had. He came out of nowhere and has been lights out. One run has crossed the plate in his last 10 outings, and he’s struck out 20 hitters in 15 innings of work through those last 10. It’ll be interesting to see how a bid in Carolina could test Brantley, but it’s clear he’s got an advanced-enough arm to give it a try.

Walking the Plank

Wander Beras, RHP
2 G, 1.2 IP, 0-0, 4.61 ERA, 3 ER, 6 H, 1:3 K:BB

Beras hasn’t had a good year, and his past week wasn’t any better. He gave up three runs Aug. 7, and surrendered three hits in 2/3 of an inning before he was pulled Aug. 10. Beras has struggled with command and he hasn’t overpowered opponents. It’s his 6th year in the organization, so his days may be numbered.

Taking On Water

Reliever Jimmy Stokes was placed on the 7-day disabled list Aug. 9. Relievers Matt Whitehouse and Kenny Mathews, and outfielder Anthony Santander remain on the 7-day disabled list.

Boarding Ship

Luis DeJesus made his return to the Captains Aug. 9. DeJesus spent the 2013 season in Lake County, where he struggled, posting a 6-11 record and 5.97 ERA. He had a very brief stint with the Captains earlier this year, but returned to the short-season Mahoning Valley Scrappers soon after.

Leaving Port

Infielder Torsten Boss was reassigned to the Carolina MudCats Aug. 12. He hit .198 through 37 games with the Captains.

On the Horizon

The Captains complete a home series with Dayton before they hit the road for a six-game road trip. They’ll head to Fort Wayne first before taking their talents south to Bowling Green until Aug. 20.
