Captains Notebook: Brown, Frank lead the pitching staff

Captains Notebook: Brown, Frank lead the pitching staff

The Lake County Captains' offense appeared to go missing last week. Luckily, the team received a few solid pitching performances, particularly from Mitch Brown. The team posted a 3-4 record last week, but managed to take two of three games from the first-place West Michigan Whitecaps at home. The final full month of the season has arrived, but the Captains are slipping from contention for a second-half playoff spot. They're now 6 1/2 games back. Here's the week in review for the Captains....

Smooth Sailing

Mitch Brown, RHP
2 G, 2-0, 13 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 8 H, 10:5 K:BB

Mitch Brown’s had an up-down season, but August has been nothing but high so far. Back in June, Brown logged a 1.71 ERA as he allowed 16 hits through 26.1 innings of work. The month of July came and Brown hit a rough skid as his ERA jumped to 5.21 for the month. If the pattern remains in tact, he’ll be due for a solid August, which would be a nice way to see him end the year.

Trevor Frank, RHP
3 G, 0-0, 3 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 R, 2 H, 4:0 K:BB

Trevor Frank has filled the closing role nicely since Ben Heller departed for high-A Carolina. Frank doesn’t throw quite as hard as Heller, but he’s struck out 50 compared to seven walks on the season. Logging a 2.91 ERA for the year, Frank has become the Captains go-to guy in the pen as he makes quick work of his innings and is trustworthy in pressure situations.

Walking the Plank

Mike Papi, OF
6 G, 18 AB, .097 BA, 2 H, 0 R, 0 RBI, 5:1 K:BB

Mike Papi is 5-for-56 so far. Perhaps promoting him to low-A after just two games in short-season ball was a hasty move by the Indians. Papi is clearly still adjusting to life in the professional realm, and understandably so, considering he leapt from the College World Series to the minor leagues. There were high-expectations for Papi, but it’s anything but fair to draw much judgment from 65 professional at-bats.

Torsten Boss, INF
5 G, 18 AB, .080 BA, 2 H, 1 R, 4 RBI, 5:2 K:BB

Boss has had a bad year. Unfortunately, he’s never really had a great year through three years of professional baseball. The Baltimore Orioles’ 8th-round pick of 2012, Boss has never hit for average -- or power. On the bright side, he’s done well defensively and could become an organizational guy.

Ivan Castillo, INF
6 G, 22 AB, .167 BA, 4 H, 4 R, 0 RBI, 2:2 K:BB

Castillo’s another guy who’s never had a great offensive year, but could find a place in the organization for his versatility and defense as a middle-infielder. He’s been a defensive upgrade over Dorssys Paulino, but his bat hasn’t done much to assist the lineup.

Taking On Water

Lefties Kenny Mathews and Matt Whitehouse remain on the 7-day disabled list.

Leaving Port

No Captains were reassigned to other teams this week.

Boarding Ship

No players were added to the Captains roster this week.

On the Horizon

The Captains head to Ft. Wayne for a 4-game series before they’ll enjoy a day off Aug. 11. The Dayton Dragons come to town for three games Aug. 12-14.

The Captains are actually only 1/2 game out of a playoff spot. Division leaders West Michigan and South Bend already clinched playoff spot in the first half, so the Captains only have to finish 4th (as the standings are now) to get into the post-season.
