Captains lose road finale to Timber Rattlers, 6-2
The Captains fell to the Timber Rattlers 6-2 on Monday. The Captains were 1-5 on their road trip to Wisconsin. They are now 13-11 on the second half of the season.
The game was scoreless until Wisconsin started if off with two runs in the bottom of the second inning, and then scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. All four runs were scored due to a fielding error from the Captains, allowing the Timber Rattlers to grab a big lead.
After scoring those four runs, Tyrone Taylor hit an RBI triple to put Wisconsin up 5-0 over the Captains.
The Captains attempted a comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A pop fly from Anthony Santander that was lost in the sun helped grab those two runs for the Captains, but that was all Lake County could bring around home.
Left hander Ryan Merritt started for the Captains and took the loss, bringing him to 5-9 on the season. He allowed nine hits, six runs, and struck out three before Felix Sterling came in to relieve him. Sterling allowed one hit and walked one before D.J. Brown closed it out for the Captains, striking out three.
Right hander Johnny Helweg, off the Milwaukee Brewer’s roster, started for Wisconsin. He pitched six innings, only allowing five hits and two runs. He also walked two and struck out four batters. Taylor Wall came in to relieve Helweg, and pitched for three shutout innings.
The Captains have an off day Tuesday before returning to Lake County to take on the Cedar Rapid Kernals on Wednesday night at 7:00pm.
