LANSING, MI - The Lansing Lugnuts (23-33, 54-71) tied the game in the ninth inning and won it in the twelfth inning on a RBI single by catcher Daniel Klein. Lansing won the game 7-6 over the Lake County Captains (28-27, 51-71) on Sunday afternoon.

The Captains scored first with a run in the first inning. Center fielder LeVon Washington singled and stole second before the first out. Catcher Jeremy Lucas singled home Washington for the first run.

First baseman Leo Castillo made the Captains lead 3-0 with a two run-double in the second. The first two batters reached on a hit batter and walk, respectively.

In the fourth, Lake County opened to their biggest lead of the day at 4-0. Designated hitter Richard Stock tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

Lugnuts’ starter Taylor Cole gave up four runs on five hits in his five innings. He walked two and struck out eight batters. Efrain Nieves entered for the sixth inning.

Lansing sent nine men to the plate in the sixth inning as they faced three different Captains pitchers en route to five runs. Captains’ starter Jake Sisco allowed the first two batters to reach on a walk and single before departing. Cody Penny came in and gave up a single to load the bases. Center fielder Dwight Smith Jr doubled home two runs and second baseman Christian Lopes tripled home two more runs to tie the game. First baseman Jordan Leyland added a RBI single to end Penny’s night. Jack Wagoner got the final two outs in the frame.

Sisco gave up two runs on two hits and three walks in five plus innings of work. Penny was charged with three runs on four hits in one third of an inning.

After Lansing took the lead in the sixth, Captains shortstop Dorssys Paulino retied the game at five with a RBI double to right field.

Nieves threw three innings of relief with one run allowed for the Lugnuts before he gave the ball to Ian Kadish for the ninth inning. Kadish gave up one run in two and one third innings.

The Captains regained a short-lived 6-5 lead in the ninth when right fielder Jorge Martinez hit his seventh home run of the year.

Wagoner threw two and two thirds innings of scoreless ball before giving way to the closer Grant Sides to close out the game.

Lansing tied the game to force extra-innings against Sides. Leyland walked to open the inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Chris Hawkins tied the game with a RBI single.

In the twelfth, the Lugnuts won the game after designated hitter Kevin Patterson walked and scored on Klein’s RBI single.

Stokes took the loss with one run allowed in two and two thirds innings. Arik Sikula won his fifth game with one and two thirds innings of scoreless baseball.

Lake County and Lansing will continue the series on Monday night. The Captains will send RHP Luis Dejesus (5-11, 6.44) to the mound to start the ballgame and the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Ben White (0-1, 3.98). First Pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM from Cooley Law School Stadium.
