June 25, 2012
DAYTON – The Lake County Captains drained the Dayton Dragons 8-3 on Monday as the Captains’ bats compiled 14 hits and took advantage of a trio of Dayton errors.
All-Star Cody Anderson (4-4, 2.99) started for the Captains against Dayton’s Tanner Robles (4-5, 4.56), though Anderson did not pitch deep into the game.
The Captains’ offense struck immediately as second baseman Jose Ramirez and shortstop Francisco Lindor laced back-to-back singles in the top of the first. Ramirez went on to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez and with one out, Lindor stole second. Lindor scored as catcher Alex Monsalve singled, giving Lake County the 2-0 lead.
The offense carried over into the second inning as the Captains took advantage of a pair of errors by the Dragons. With one on and one out, Dragons’ third baseman Junior Arias committed a throwing error that allowed first baseman Leonardo Castillo to advance to third and Ramirez to reach second. After Lindor grounded out, Rodriguez drew a walk and Castillo and Ramirez both scored on a fielding error by shortstop Juan Perez, boosting the Captains to a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Anderson tossed two scoreless innings that were highlighted by a pair of ejections, as Dayton manager Delino DeShields and first baseman Sean Buckley were ejected for arguing strikes.
The Captains continued to roll through the third as Castillo hit a two-out double and scored after advancing on a wild pitch and a single by Ramirez.
Anderson was pulled after three innings, ending his line with two hits and two walks allowed while striking out four. He was replaced with right-hander Mason Radeke (5-1, 2.76).
Lake County added two more in the sixth off of Dayton reliever Erik Miller (0-1, 9.00), who replaced Robles to start the inning. Lindor led off with a walk and Rodriguez singled before right fielder Jordan Smith was plunked by a pitch to load the bases. Cue Monsalve, who had his second hit of the evening with a single to right to plate Lindor. With two out, left fielder Bryson Myles was also hit by a pitch to push Rodriguez home, increasing the Captains’ lead to 7-0.
The Dragons finally found their way onto the board in their half of the sixth as second baseman Ryan Wright and right fielder Kyle Waldrop hit a double and a single respectively. With one out, Wright scored on a groundout by first baseman Nick O’Shea to put Dayton down 7-1.
The Dragons drew two more runs off of Radeke in the seventh as they took advantage of an error by third baseman Todd Hankins. With one on and two out, centerfielder Yorman Rodriguez reached second on a throwing error by Hankins. Both runners scored on another double by Wright, bringing the Dragons closer at a 7-3 score.
Righty Rob Nixon (1-1, 3.41) replaced Radeke to record the third out of the seventh, and the 7-3 lead was more than enough for Nixon as shut down the Dragons through the eighth and ninth.
Meanwhile, the Captains added one more insurance run in the ninth as Lindor reached on the Dragons’ third error of the evening and scored on a single by Smith, finalizing the score at 8-3 in the Captains’ favor.
Next, the Captains and Dragons square off in game two of their three-game series on Tuesday. Left-hander Shawn Morimando (2-1, 3.98) is expected to start for Lake County against Dayton’s Stalin Gerson (3-5, 4.64).
