Captains Blanked By Whitecaps 6-0
August 2, 2012
COMSTOCK PARK – The Lake County Captains’ offense nearly fell victim to perfection as they tallied just three hits in a 6-0 loss against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday.
All-Star Cody Anderson (4-6, 3.29) started for the Captains against West Michigan righty Jeff Ferrell (4-4, 4.42).
The Captains’ offense was dominated by Ferrell as he flirted with perfection. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps jumped on Anderson early.
Second baseman Brandon Loy hit a one-out single to left and advanced to second on a wild-pitch. With two outs, first baseman Aaron Westlake singled to right to score Loy. Right fielder Jeff McVaney followed with a double to plate Westlake, giving the Whitecaps the 2-0 lead.
The game turned into a pitchers’ duel as both starters sailed through their opponent’s line-ups. Anderson, who is on an inning limit for the remainder of the season, went three innings, surrendering two runs on just four hits. He was replaced with Kyle Petter to start the fourth.
Petter relinquished just one hit through three scoreless innings before giving way to Louis Head in the seventh.
Meanwhile, Ferrell carried the Whitecaps through seven innings of perfection before he was replaced with left-hander Jade Todd to start the eighth.
Head struggled through the seventh as the Whitecaps tacked on four more. McVaney greeted Head with a lead-off single and third baseman Jason King laced a single of his own into center. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Pat Leyland and left fielder Jason Krizan drew a walk. Catcher Gabriel Purroy tapped a grounder to third and a fielding error by third baseman Yhoxian Medina allowed Purroy to reach base and a run to score. The Captains cut down the lead runner at the plate on a force play for the second out, but Loy doubled to left to empty the bases, advancing the Whitecaps to a 6-0 lead.
That was all right-hander Daniel Bennett needed for the ninth, though the Captains kept things interesting as they managed to break up any chances at a no-hitter. Designated hitter Leonardo Castillo slapped the Captains’ first hit of the night to third and with two out, second baseman Jose Ramirez and shortstop Francisco Lindor laced a pair of back-to-back singles. However, Bennett quickly recorded the third out to secure the Whitecaps with the 6-0 shutout win.
On Friday, the Captains and Whitecaps complete their three-game series as Lake County turns to lefty Shawn Morimando (4-3, 3.44) to take on West Michigan’s Chad Smith (0-0, 0.00).
