Chicago — Asdrubal Cabrera singled home two runs in the top of the eighth inning off Chicago reliever Matt Thornton as the Cleveland Indians beat the White Sox 3-2 in the opener of a three-game series.

Center fielder Drew Stubbs reached on an infield single to third base with one out in the eighth and advanced to second on his third stolen base of the season. Left fielder Michael Brantley followed with a walk and both runners advanced after a throwing error by Thornton (0-1, 4.76). Following a strikeout, Cabrera hit a line drive single to center to score both runners, putting the Tribe up 3-2.

Thornton struggled through his one inning of work, allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks.

Chicago starter Dylan Axelrod kept the Cleveland bats quiet over six innings of work, allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Indians took their first lead of the night in the top half of the second. With runners on first and second with two outs, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall hit a bloop double to left field scoring designated hitter Jason Giambi.

Chisenhall finished with two hits in four at-bats, raising his season average to .245. He was the only Cleveland hitter with more than one hit.

Chicago third baseman Conor Gillaspie erased the lead immediately in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run to right off Indians starter Justin Masterson. It was the first homer for Gillaspie since September 27, 2011 when he was with the San Francisco Giants.

The White Sox took a 2-1 lead off Masterson with two outs in the fourth when Hector Giminez doubled to deep center field, scoring Alexei Ramirez from first base.

Masterson (4-1, 1.85) picked up his fourth win of the season after the Indians scored twice in the eighth. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and four walks over seven innings of work. He struck out five batters.

Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up his fourth hold of the season. Chris Perez worked around a hit to save his second consecutive game and his third overall.

Cleveland will continue their series with Chicago Tuesday night at 8:10 p.m. Zach McAllister (1-2, 3.12) will look to push the Indians winning streak to four games against White Sox southpaw Jose Quintana (1-0, 2.55).

Notes: After Asdrubal Cabrera's game-winning single in the eighth, the Indians won their first game of season after trailing past the sixth inning. … Catcher Lou Marson will rejoin the team on Tuesday and be activated on Wednesday.

Important win last night. As Rich mentioned, the Indians have two tough lefties on the docket, so battling and scraping for one win is much easier than doing it for both. Hopefully the Indians can find a way to win one so they win another series.

Maybe Cabrera should fall down the dugout steps more often.

We really needed this win because we get Quintana and Sale the next two games, so it's going to be very tough. However, the Sox are not playing well and Adam Dunn is mired in a deep slump, so they can be beat if you scratch together a few runs.

For once Konerko didn't beat us. Now that I said that he'll probably kick our butts tonight.
