WINSTON-SALEM, NC — A ninth-inning rally propelled the Carolina Mudcats to a 7-5 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash Sunday.

Torsten Boss erased a one-run deficit with a three-run homer to right as the Mudcats downed the Dash for the third consecutive day.

Carolina grabbed the lead in the top of the third, as James Roberts led off with a homerun to left off Winston-Salem starter Nick Blount. After a Logan Vick pop out, Blount hit Yhoxian Medina then allowed the shortstop into scoring position with a wild pitch. After Medina took third on a Yandy Diaz groundout, Joe Sever walked before Alex Monsalve doubled the Mudcat lead, plating Medina with a single to left as Carolina went up 2-0.

The Dash came storming back in the bottom of the fourth, roughing up Carolina ace Ryan Merritt. With one out,Trey Michalczewski singled up the middle then took second on an error by Vick in center. Mike Marjama then put men on the corners with his own base hit to center. After Merritt forced a pop out by Nick BastoC.J. Beatty put the Dash ahead with a three-run shot to right.

The Mudcats rallied back to reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth. Brag Goldberg walked Vick, Medina and Diaz to fill the bases with no outs. Joe Sever then evened the score at 3, scoring Vick with a sacrifice fly to right. Monsalve then put the Muddies ahead, following with a sacrifice fly of his own to score Medina and make it 4-3.

Winston-Salem again battled back, with Michalczewski leading off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left against Merritt. A botched pickoff attempt moved the third baseman to second, allowing Marjama to tie the game at 4 with a double to left.

Leaving with the score level, Merritt took no decision after a 6.0 inning start. The southpaw gave up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.

The Dash appeared poised to grab their first win of the series, taking the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With Jacob Lee on the hill for Carolina, Keon Barnum led off with a single to center then moved into scoring position on Michalczewski’s sacrifice bunt. Lee got out number two, forcing Marjama to fly out to left. But Basto struck with two outs, singling to right as Barnum came in to make it 5-4.

However, Boss and the Mudcats weren’t quite done, as Zach Isler would find out in the top of the ninth. Medina led off by reaching on an error, then took second on a sacrifice by Diaz. Sever’s infield hit put men on the corners, but Carolina found themselves down to their final out as Isler fanned Monsalve. Boss then stunned the Dash with his long ball to right as the Mudcats shot ahead 7-5.

Josh Martin then sealed the win for the Mudcats, shutting down the Dash in the bottom of the ninth for his second save of the year.

Lee (3-0, 3.15) earned the win for Carolina, allowing an earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings.

An out from the save, Isler (1-7, 5.45) was saddled with both the loss and blown save. He allowed three unearned runs on two hits in his inning of work.

The win moves the Mudcats to 30-31 on the second half. With Sunday’s Carolina League action in the books, the Mudcats sit 1.5 games behind the Salem Red Sox in the race for the Southern Division’s final playoff spot.

Carolina will go for the four-game sweep of the Dash Monday at BB&T Ballpark. Dylan Baker (3-2, 4.68) is scheduled to start for the Mudcats against Brandon Brennan (2-0, 3.54).

First pitch is set for 7 PM.
