Around The Farm: September 6, 2012

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game. 

Bryson Myles (LF, Lake County): 4-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 SO, 1 SB, 1 PO

Bryson Myles may have scored the game-winning series-clinching run in one of the least sexy ways last night (scoring on a wild pitch dropped third strike), but you take what you can get. Myles has been absolutely amazing so far in the playoffs (though two games is – obviously – a small sample size) and is showing the immense talent he possesses. We’re all still waiting on the power with Myles, but if (when?) it comes in, he will be a truly special player with everything he can do already.

Enosil Tejeda (RP, Lake County): S (2), 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO

Enosil Tejeda may have hit the first batter he faced last night, but he followed it up by striking out the side and clinching a series victory for the Lake County Captains. Tejeda was downright dominant this season (1.39 ERA in 32.1 innings between Mahoning Valley and Lake County) and he’s going to be a big part of the Captains’ push for a title in the games ahead.

Ryan Rohlinger (SS, Akron): 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI

The Aeros may have lost 7-5 last night, but it certainly wasn’t Ryan Rohlinger’s fault. The infielder launched a two-run go-ahead home run last night in the top of the sixth that would have been the difference-maker if the bullpen hadn’t blown it. As I’ve been saying all year, Rohlinger is exactly the type of player that would help the Aeros in the playoffs since he has great plate discipline, is a veteran player, and is very versatile (Rohlinger has logged more than 20 games each at second base, shortstop, and third base in Akron this season). Rohlinger isn’t a prospect, but it certainly won’t be his fault if the Aeros don’t win the Eastern League championship.

Matt Lawson (2B, Akron): 2-for-3, 2 R, 1 3B

The same ideas for Rohlinger apply to Matt Lawson; he’s a real gamer that is helping the Aeros here in the playoffs. Lawson’s triple last night preceded Rohlinger’s home run and he continued hitting well just like he did in the regular season. The Aeros may be down 2-0 in their series, but they could easily come back with three home games Friday through Sunday; and if the Aeros are going to come back, I would bet that Lawson will be a big part of it.

• T.J. House (SP, Akron): ND, 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2 HR. House left the game with the chance at a win, but that was more because of Ryan Rohlinger’s home run than House’s pitching. Danny Salazar better bring his A-game tomorrow night because poor “starting” pitching (I’m counting Paolo Espino here) has doomed the Aeros so far. 
• Trey Haley (RP, Akron): BS, 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 2 SO. Two strikeouts, a bases-loaded hit by pitch that allowed in a run; yep, that sounds like the Trey Haley we all know. 
• Shawn Armstrong (RP, Akron): L (0-1), 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 0 SO. More unearned runs out of the Aeros’ bullpen, but at some point you have to shut it down (especially in a playoff game) even if the defense lets you down. 
• Lonnie Chisenhall (DH, Akron): 0-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO. Chisenhall may not have gotten a hit, but he did manage to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly. Hopefully he’ll be back in Cleveland soon so he can get a jump on claiming the third base job in 2013. 
• Jesus Aguilar (PH, Akron): 0-for-1, 1 SO. Aguilar pinch-hit for Nick Weglarz in the 8^th inning last night, raising an interesting question: why wasn’t Aguilar – probably the Aeros’ best power threat – starting in a big playoff game? 
• Mason Radeke (SP, Lake County): ND, 3.1 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR. Radeke only recorded ten outs and allowed nine hits; not a banner start.
• Louis Head (RP, Lake County): 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 5 SO. It just was not a good night for Indians’ bullpen members and unearned runs. To be fair, Head would have been out of the inning without an Alex Lavisky throwing error on a dropped third strike, but you’ve still got to shut the door in the big moment of a playoff game.
• Francisco Lindor (SS, Lake County): 1-for-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 SO. There have been better games, but Lindor’s triple in the 1^st inning led to the Captains’ first run on the night. There is no way Lake County would be advancing in the playoffs without Lindor.
• Jose Ramirez (2B, Lake County): 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI. Ramirez has been the toast of IPI for a while now and he showed why last night, coming up big when it mattered the most.
• Jordan Smith (RF, Lake County): 2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 SO. Smith also continued a very good season last night, driving in two of Lake County’s five runs. He still doesn’t have much power, but there is no doubt that Smith can play.
