Around the Farm: October 30, 2012

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Here is the rundown of what Indians players in fall and winter ball did yesterday.

Arizona Fall League

• Ronny Rodriguez (2B, Scottsdale Scorpions): 1-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI, SB.  Rodriguez continues to see most of his playing time at second base in the AFL (just 1 game so far at shortstop). He has made 1 error so far in 36 total chances at second base compared to 1 error in 7 total chances at shortstop.
• Carlos Moncrief (RF, Scottsdale Scorpions): 1-for-5, R, 2 K. As expected, Moncrief was taken off the taxi squad on Tuesday and will now be able to play with a lot more regularity the final two-plus weeks of the AFL season. In 3 games he is 5-for-13 with 2 extra base hits and should now get a better chance to showcase his growing skills on a more frequent basis.
• Alex Monsalve (C, Scottsdale Scorpions): 1-for-3, 2 R, 2B, BB. Like with most catchers playing in the AFL the playing time continues to be limited for Monsalve; however, he has been at his best the last two games going 3-for-7 at the plate with 2 doubles (his only 2 extra base hits this fall).
• Trey Haley (RP, Scottsdale Scorpions): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Haley threw a very efficient 19 pitches over his 2.0 innings of work, throwing 11 of them for strikes and did not allow a baserunner. Since his first outing in the AFL on October 9^th when he allowed 2 runs in 1.0 inning of work he has had 6 straight scoreless appearances covering 8.0 innings (1 H, 1 BB, 2 K).

Dominican Winter League

• Juan Diaz (SS, Estrelles de Oriente): 0-for-4, K. Diaz is just 2-for-13 (.154) so far this offseason, and is off to a slow start defensively as well with 2 errors in 18 total chances.
• Tim Fedroff (LF, Aguilas Cibaenas): 0-for-2, K. Fedroff was pinch hit for in the 6^th inning, likely because a left-hander was brought in to face him (these DWL managers play to win). So far his winter ball campaign has gotten off to a cold start as he is just 8-for-35 (.229) in 9 games, and after getting a hit in each of his first 7 games he has been held hitless in his last 2 games.
• Kelvin De La Cruz (RP, Aguilas Cibaenas): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. It’s good to catch up with a former Indians minor leaguer, and De La Cruz had a good outing in his winter ball debut. The Indians parted ways with him in spring training and he pitched for Double-A Erie (Detroit Tigers) this past season, and in 30 games (18 starts) went 5-8 with a 4.92 ERA. In fact, De La Cruz was sandwiched in this game between two other former Indians minor league relievers as Luis Perdomo pitched before him and Josh Judy relieved him.
