Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Here is the rundown of what Indians players in fall and winter ball did yesterday.
Arizona Fall League
- Tyler Holt (RF, Scottsdale Scorpions): 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 SB. Holt has done well so far in the AFL and has now gone 12-for-41 with four stolen bases. The speed is certainly nice, but one troubling aspect is the fact that he has still yet to record an extra-base hit. He had showed ability during the regular season to leg out extra-base hits, but it has simply been absent thus far.
- Alex Monsalve (C, Scottsdale Scorpions): 2-for-4. 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K. This was easily Monsalve’s best game so far in the AFL. In his previous six games, Monsalve had totaled three hits, but he almost got that total just in Friday’s contest.
- Trey Haley (RP, Scottsdale Scorpions): 1 IP. Haley made his sixth appearance Friday, and the right-hander has now pitched six straight innings without allowing a run. Aside from his AFL debut when he allowed two runs in an inning, Haley has pretty much been automatic. Just how good was he on Friday? Well, he needed just nine pitches to make it through the inning, and five of them were strikes.

The Indians really like Haley in a pen role and believe he is a ML relief arm for sure. That said, there is some talk that they may try him in a starting role again, but there have been no final decisions on that. We won't know for sure until spring training. It should be noted that there was a lot of talk last offseason about starting Cody Allen, but they ultimately decided that the pen was the best path for him....and I would suspect that the same will happen with Haley. He has really taken to the role well and it helps cover some of his command issues. He has the pitches to start.....but it is the command and everything else that have hindered him in the role previously, so being in the pen allows everything else to play up and he has been awesome as a result. Interesting decision indeed.

tony, is haley now considered and probably forever considered a relief pitcher? Did they determine he didnt have enough plus pitches to be a starter. He obviously has electric stuff. and is highly regarded as a prospect, however if the indians have one strength it is potential back end of the bullpen.
Could Haley be tried as a starter do you reckon or has he proven that he is forever gonna be a back end of the bullpen heat guy?
