Around The Farm: November 29, 2012

Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game. 

Note that the Australian and Dominican Baseball Leagues were off last night.

Here is the rundown of what Cleveland players in fall and winter ball did yesterday:

Venezuelan Winter League

• Ezequiel Carrera (RF-CF): 1-for-4, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 E. Just another routine day from Carrera, reaching base twice, stealing a base, and struggling in the field. Still, this offseason has been a good start for Carrera headed into Spring Training.
• Hector Rondon (RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO. Make it 13 straight scoreless outings for Rondon, another player successfully using the winter league to put himself into a better position. I for one am excited to see what 2013 is going to hold for Rondon and cannot wait for the season to start.
• Eric Berger (SP): W (1-4), 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO. And yet another player in the Venezuelan League. Berger now has 33 strikeouts in 35.2 innings while only walking eight; he may be turning 27 in April, but there is still a chance for the left-hander, especially considering his strong SO:BB.

Puerto Rican Winter League

• Matt Langwell (RP): L (0-2), 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR. Langwell started off his outing well, getting a grounder back to himself. The next batter finished the game with a walk-off home run. That was the first run Langwell allowed in winter ball, though, so one slipup can be forgiven.
• Giovanni Soto (RP): W (1-0), 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO. Soto, on the other hand, had a very strong game in his first multi-inning outing this winter. After six walks in 4.2 innings, Soto's no-walk showing is a strong step in the right direction.

Mexican Winter League

• Karim Garcia (RF): 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO. Garcia just turned 37 years old, but he is still plugging away in Mexican leagues. He has hit eight home runs in 32 winter games after hitting 22 in 101 games over the summer, great numbers for the outfielder.
