Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Note: The Dominican Winter League was off on Thursday.

Puerto Rico Winter League

Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 0-for-2, E. Perez is still looking for his first hit in Puerto Rico this offseason, although he has just seven official at bats in six games played. He only hit .200 with 2 HR, 34 RBI and .623 OPS this season in 99 combined games between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, and has pretty much pigeon-holed himself as strictly an upper level depth catching option that is a very good defender but is very limited with the bat.

Venezuela Winter League

Jon Meloan (RP, Caribes de Anzoategui): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. One of the things I love about following up on all the winter ball action on a nightly basis is seeing some old friends and familiar faces in the box score. Some may remember that he was the second player the Indians received from the Dodgers in the Casey Blake deal - a deal that also brought the Indians catcher Carlos Santana. Then, barely a year after being acquired, he was dumped to the Rays for Winston Abreu. The move never made much sense at the time, but I have always believed there were some behind the scenes things they led to that deal.

Ezequiel Carrera (CF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 0-for-3, BB. Since Carrera officially filed for minor league free agency several days ago we have not been keeping tabs on him on a nightly basis, but I know there are some out there who still hope the Indians resign him. The chances of that are extremely remote since the Indians probably are not a good fit for him as far as a major league opportunity goes, so he should sign elsewhere. He’s having a nice showing this offseason hitting .281 with 3 HR, 13 RBI and .817 OPS in 35 games, and he has 15 stolen bases and a 24-23 walk to strikeout ratio.

Hector Rondon (RP, Leones del Caracas): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. The Indians lost Rondon last December in the Rule 5 Draft and he stuck all season in the Cubs’ major league bullpen posting a 4.77 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 7.2 K/9. So far, he hasn’t proven to be much of a great loss and is just another fungible middle reliever, but he is having a good showing in winter ball racking up a 1.93 ERA in 10 appearances, though has allowed 11 hits and 2 walks and only 6 strikeouts in 9.1 innings of work.
