Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Here is the rundown of what Indians players in winter ball did yesterday. The Australian Baseball League was off on Tuesday.
Venezuelan Winter League
- Ezequiel Carrera (LF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 2-for-4. Overall, Carrera has gone 38-for-134 in 36 games this winter. He’s been a consistent performer throughout his minor league career, and that has also been the case this winter. Hopefully, we happen to see some more of that consistency this year at the Major League level.
Dominican Winter League
- Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 3-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI. That brilliant winter campaign continues for Ramirez, who has now gone 57-for-183 in 48 games. He showed some rare power on Tuesday by launching a home run, which happened to be his first home run this winter. Power is one of the only areas where Ramirez is lacking so while it’s wishful thinking, it would be great if Tuesday was the start of a trend.
Puerto Rican Winter League
- Roberto Perez (DH, Indios de Mayaguez): 0-for-2, 2 BB, 1 K. Even though he wasn't able to muster a hit, Perez still got on base twice by drawing two walks. His plate discipline has been an area where he’s been impressive this winter, as he’s now drawn 13 walks and struck out 12 times in 21 games.

What I like the most about Ramirez is that he's one of those guys I don't think many saw coming...that adds to the minor league "booty" so-to-speak. If he legitimizes his first two years in the system with a big season in Carolina...it gives the Indians a lot of middle infield collateral moving forward. Next season, the Indians could have 5 middle infielders close to major league ready ready, and all in Tony's top 6 or 7 players (next year). That's not counting Cabrera or Kipnis.It really could give u interesting options to improve the team.

Ramirez does not have the body that projects to get much bigger. He will likely always be a 3-6 homer at best guy. But he has some good gap power and as long as he has that he should be fine. He's likely to max out with his body/size to that of a Jose Constanza type (his upside as a player is obviously much higher than that).

Actually Ramirez just turned 20 yrs. old, and though he has a smallish frame, he could develop some more strength, and perhaps add a few more Hrs. Would be nice to see him develop in to a player such as Jose Reyes. Will be interesting to watch these young middle infielders develop. This year will be very interesting.

It is amazing how much Ramirez has shot up the charts this year. He's the real deal. The Indians have so much middle infield talent....hopefully some of these guys pan out for the Indians to either use in Cleveland or as valuable trade chips down the line.

If Ramirez can develope the ability to hit 10 HR a year then wow, what a prospect he will become.
Definitely a good time to be a Tribe fan. I only wish they had the same "problem" with pitching. I hope that they may change the approach to the coming draft to focus heavily on pitching. Always draft BPA, but when two guys are equal grades lean toward pitching...
