Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Here is the rundown of what Indians players in winter ball did yesterday. The Dominican Winter League was off on Monday.
Venezuela Winter League:
- Ezequiel Carrera (LF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 1-for-3, R, 3B, RBI, BB. Carrera has racked up 130 at bats this offseason in 35 games, which is playing time he needed to show the Indians what he can do and also prepare him for a big spring training with the Indians as he fights to win a fourth outfielder job he is favored to win. He is hitting .277 and has a nice 19:18 walk to strikeout ratio with 9 stolen bases. If he can provide that as a fourth outfielder next year, the Indians would be thrilled.
- Asdrubal Cabrera (SS, Leones del Caracas): 0-for-3, 2 K. With the 0-fer on the night, Cabrera’s overall batting average fell to .283 this offseason in 16 combined regular season and playoff games in Venezuela. He has been a bit impatient walking just 3 times while striking out 14 times in 67 at bats.
- Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 2-for-4, R, HR, RBI, K. Aguilar got off to a very cold start in winter ball…..disappeared for several weeks…and since reappearing he has looked like the Aguilar of last offseason. He is now hitting .290 with 5 HR, 12 RBI, and an OPS north of .900 in 24 games.
Puerto Rico Winter League:
- Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 0-for-0. Perez was inserted into the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as a defensive replacement at catcher. He has played just 19 total games and accrued 59 total at bats this offseason in Puerto Rico, but he is hitting .288/.400/.322 and playing his customary very good defense.

Well Roger, I've played and followed the game for 30 yrs. I know what a streak is and what streaky players do, I also have been around PED's more than most. The Aguilar thing smells like something more than streaky. I'm not saying it's PED's but when your whole game changes for months at a time, you have to test to rule it out. You don't want to give a player a contract based on his performance on PED's. It's not like amphetamines, or Rockstar or 5 hr Energy that gives you a boost for a game or two. Steroids change who you are as a human not to mention as a player.

I'm encouraged by how Aguilar has rebounded after a two first two months in winter ball. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't mean a whole lot, but he is setting himself up for a big year in Akron.

shy, that is indicting based on erratic numbers, If you follow jesus from april thru august he is a streak hitter as most power hitters are. There a very few pure power hitter who arent streaky. I doubt jesus is using PED's even before PEDS power hitters were streaky. and he is the cunsumate streak hitter. I just hope he matures and becomes more consistant but i would bet sometime in2018 people will be complaining in the show what a streak hitter he is.

So what's the deal w Aquilar? Hits the cover off the ball for a couple months, then can't hit water if he falls off a boat for a couple months, then disappears for a couple months and starts the ball is flying out of the yard again. Sounds like PED's to me. How else would you explain it? You know- anybody that has this kind of erratic record from Bryce Stowell to Jesus Aquilar- the Indians have an investment in then, they should have them pee in a cup. These guys don't have a union. It's the peeway or the freeway.
Maybe he took advantage of the time off to work on something in the batting cages.
When I see guys who never hit home runs suddenly hitting home runs, that's when I suspect steroids. This guy has always hit home runs.
