Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Here is the rundown of what Indians players in winter ball did yesterday. The Puerto Rico Winter League was off on Monday.
Dominican Winter League:
- Jose Ramirez (2B-SS, Toros del Este): 1-for-4, R, 2 RBI. Ramirez hit in the second spot in the order on Monday and continues to hit in the top two spots of the lineup as a tablesetter for the rest of the lineup. Ramirez has gained a ton of invaluable experience this offseason playing in 51 games and has piled up 195 at bats and is hitting a very healthy .308 and 22-27 walk to strikeout ratio. It is amazing how quickly this kid has jumped onto the scene, and what he has done this offseason has a lot of people with the Indians and in the scouting world impressed.
- Jerry Gil (RHP, Estrelles de Oriente): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K. Gil lived on the edge on Monday allowing three baserunners to reach in the 9th inning but escaped without allowing a run all while preserving a 7-3 win for his team. He has been a workhorse this offseason pitching in 33 games with a 1.55 ERA and 9 saves.
- Edward Paredes (LHP, Aguilas Cibaenas): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Paredes entered the game with one out in the 6th inning and after walking the first batter he retired the next two batters to close out the inning. He has now appeared in 35 games this offseason and in 19.1 innings has a 1.40 ERA.
Venezuela Winter League:
- Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-1, 2B, RBI. Aguilar was removed from the game in the second inning after he hit a line drive run scoring double and then ran from second to third when the next batter singled. The severity of the injury is unknown and he may have just been taken out for precautionary reasons, but the MiLB site says he was taken out due to a shoulder injury; however, one of the newspapers that covered the game said he hurt his right leg running to third. Either way he is injured, and you just hope it is nothing serious. The Indians last week granted his request to stay in Venezuela to continue participating in the playoffs rather than come to Cleveland as scheduled to be a part of the Winter Development Program. If it ends up being something serious, boy would they be kicking themselves for allowing him to stay.
- Asdrubal Cabrera (SS, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-4, R, K. Cabrera has been steady all offseason hitting .310 with an .837 OPS in 21 games. I do not recall him playing this deep into the winter ball season last year, so perhaps this is a way to get him into better game shape coming into spring training this season.
- Ezequiel Carrera (LF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 1-for-4, R, SB. Interestingly, Carrera found himself hitting in the #5 spot of the order on Monday night, which is an unusual spot in the order for him considering he has little power and is more of a tablesetter. In any case, he continues to have a solid offseason hitting .279 with a very good 20-21 walk to strikeout ratio and 13 stolen bases in 41 games.

From what I have hear, the injury to Aguilar is not considered to be serious and he was removed from precautionary reasons. No confirmation yet, but heard a slight strain in leg. Could be back in the lineup tonight or tomorrow. Also, Norm, Ramirez is a lock to open in Carolina.

Difficult for me to see any correlation between Sizemore and Aguilar injury situations but would be very disappointed if Aguilar loses it like Sizemore. Easy to second guess but nice to know he was wanted for the league postseason which is big to them. Personally, I am not critical of the decision. Aguilar could have fallen on the ice in Cleveland and been out as well.
Tony, do you think there is a question that Ramirez starts at Carolina? Can't see it my self but the Indians web site left the issue open for him and no one else. But they also believe Diaz is a ML prospect which do not.

I doubt preparing for the WBC has any affect at all on Sizemore's health that hear. And it was the elbow surgery which was the first injury that held him out (he had the sports hernia surgery shortly after to kill two birds with one stone).

yeah, but there's a good chance it was due to him gearing up for the WBC. At the time:
"I did speed up the process this offseason as far as training and getting into camp," Sizemore said. "You get tweaks and pulls every now and then, especially in Spring Training. But I can't say it was because I trained differently or not."
That groin issue never properly healed, then he had the sports hernia surgery related to that in September after playing through it all year.

FYI, but Sizemore never played in the WBC. He was committed to pay in 2009 but a hernia operation and surgery on his left elbow in spring training forced him to pull out.

The WBC always gives me bad vibes since that's when Sizemore originally hurt himself, when he was getting ready for the WBC. I have always wondered if he doesn't have the groin injury, that he then played through in Cleveland in 2009, would he have had the knee problems? I don't want Perez and Pestano there. It's doing something different at a different level than what they are used to at that time of year. Pestano especially, with his history of arm trouble and his velocity drop last year, him not having a normal spring training worries me.

if u trip over something ,or fall , get hurt in any manner, it wouldn't happen just cuz it'd like that in a different setting / country. I mean that's just silly. but ill agree I think the pot season atmosphere of playing for not than just fun but definite competition. oppose to taking a night off , to be rested for games, regular season move. playing with flu post season. hitting with 2 outs risp postseason all the way. am I glad he hurt NO. but I hope he learned something from it. with that said , Ramirez is projecting to b a mlb lead off hitter. makes sense. y was zeke in@ 5 hole? He's a projected 4 th outfielder, not for Arizona or Oakland lol. but seriously 5 hole? Trying out line ups for a better fit is one assumption. like a table setter batting 9th or pitcher 8th ,strategy falls into play somewhere. bump and run Maybe?

Even if Aguilar has a "real" injury I'm glad the Indians let him stay to compete in the playoffs down there. I'd imagine there is a lot of pride and being in that type of atmosphere is only a good thing. Regarless of injuries.
Same goes for the FO allowing both Perez and Pestano to pitch for Team USA in the WBC. I never understood why teams (probably more driven by sports writers hype) would feel upset if a player was hurt while playing in the WBC or the Olympics. Chances are the same injury would happen if they were in spring training.
