Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Dominican Winter League

Carlos Santana (Leones del Escogido, 3B): 1-for-1, 2 BB. Santana reached base in all three plate appearances before being removed in the ninth inning for defensive purposes and his team up 1-0 (they held the lead for the win). He did make a play in the field nor did he really have a ball hit in his area to have a chance to make one. From the sounds of things coming out of the Dominican, the Indians like what they have seen so far of Santana at third base and all signs point to him going into spring training as a legit option there. He won’t be the regular third baseman as that would still primarily be Lonnie Chisenhall’s duty, but if Santana really can pull this off then the plan is to use him at third base mostly against lefties.

Venezuela Winter League

Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, DH): 0-for-4, 2 K. “You see! He’s not a machine. He’s a man!” So said Duke to Rocky when he cut the big Russian Ivan Drago in the movie Rocky IV. Aguilar has been like a machine the entire offseason, and for one night at least, he proved to be human. He was given the okay by the Indians earlier this week to continue playing for his Caracas team, but he is being limited to DH duties only.

Asdrubal Cabrera (Leones del Caracas, DNP): Cabrera has been with his Caracas teammates the last few days. He has been in uniform and taken batting and fielding practice, but is not expected to play for them in the playoffs.  He has been working out in Florida to come into spring training in good condition and ready for a big year (his free agent year).

Playoffs

The round robin phase in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico comes to a close on Friday January 17th. With both leagues enjoying an off day on Monday, that leaves just five games left in the round robin phase. Carlos Santana’s team, Leones del Escogido, owns the top record with a 9-4 record with two teams tied for the second spot at 6-7. With a three game lead and just five games left, his team has a good shot to get to the Dominican Winter League finals.

The Venezuela Winter League wraps up on Tuesday January 21st. Jesus Aguilar’s team, Leones del Caracas is 5-3 which is good for the second best record and a one game lead with eight games to go. According to reports in Venezuela, Aguilar won’t be allowed to play behind the 21st even if his team advances to the Venezuela League Championship Series because he is expected to return to the states to participate in the Indians winter development program.

Let's hope Asdrubal can get off to a good start. I think last season he started slow and then pressed harder and harder all year long and just dug a bigger hole. He didn't start looking like himself until near the end of the year. Both he a Swisher need to come out of the starting gate strong, and if so, look for big things from the Tribe!

Thanks!

I enjoy this site. I also think this site offers more than just opinions. It is educational.

Over the past 3-5 years WAR has kind of been adopted as the best one stat that paints an entire picture for a player as it includes everything offensively and defensively and such. Our own Jeff Ellis did a piece on it almost two years ago explaining it....perhaps I should re-post it to the main page: http://www.indiansbaseballinsider.com/blog/explaining-stats-wins-above-replacement-23507

I'm from the old school and WAR is sort of foreign to me. What stats are used to determine WAR? When did MLB begin use the sub metrics to value MLB players? I did not know that his OPS was decent last year because every time there was clutch situation he was a rally killer by strikng out or hitting into double play.

Walter, Cabrera didn't have a good season by the standards we set for him....but it wasn't THAT bad. He had a 1.2 WAR and his .700 OPS was 6th among shortstops in MLB. There is enough there to get him a major league deal for sure if he repeated that this coming season. It's not All Star money worthy, but enough where he could get a 2-3 year deal for $6-8 million or so a year.

He played winter ball last year and had a really good numbers. Came into the season in great shape as well. Didn't really do him much good though...

With the lousy year he had, Cabrera should have played some winter ball. Or reason he did not play was the conditioning program was more important for his baseball future. Could we see a lighter and quicker Cabrera in SPT?
