Around The Farm: December 27, 2013
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM) - PLAYOFFS DAY 1
Carlos Santana (Leones del Escogido, 3B-1B): 1-3, 1 BB, 1 E - The good news: Santana keeps hitting and getting on base. The bad news is the error parade at third continues. I don't know if the shift to first base late in the gane was a result of starting first baseman Erick Almonte being pinch-hit for in the eighth inning by third baseman Pedro Ciriaco or if Ciriaco was brought in specifically in order to move Santana over to first, but if the latter is true, then it may be the first sign of the Leones losing patience with this experiment interfering with their playoff campaign. The question then would be whether the Indians would keep Santana in the DR if the leones won't play him at third in the playoffs.
NOTE: Today's action was the first day of the round-robin stage of the LIDOM playoffs. The round-robin stage consists of the top four (out of six) teams from the regular season standings playing each other six times (three at home, three away) for a total of eighteen games. The top two teams from the round-robin playoff standings will meet in the best-of-9 LIDOM Serie Final, with the winner being crowned LIDOM Champions and earning the right to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series in February in Margarita, Venezuela.
PUERTO RICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LBPRC)
Roberto Perez (Indios de Mayaguez, backup C): 0-1, 1 K - Perez struck out swinging in the ninth in his only plate appearance after coming in for starter Martin Maldonado in the seventh inning. This was Perez's first playing time for the Indios in nine days, and with paltry numbers such as his sub-Mendoza Line batting average, it's easy to see why.
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LVBP)
Ramon Rodriguez (Caribes de Anzoategui, RP): 1 IP, perfect - Ramirez follows up his one-hit, 1.2 IP winter debut exactly a week ago with an inning of perfect relief in the Caribes' 6-5 win over the Cardenales de Lara. Ram-Rod is coming off an uneven first season in the states that, much like his rookies season in the DSL in 2012, was marred by poor fielding behind him leading to a plethora of unearned runs. We are getting a chance to see what he can do with veteran fielding behind him, and so far it is impressive.
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, 1B): 1-5, 1 K, 1 E - Even on an off day, Aguilar picks up a hit. He is in a bit of a mini-slump, going only 3-for-13 in his last four games, but he has shown himself to be capable of getting out of such slumps before so it's way too soon to be getting concerned about it. Don't be too worried about the error either. It was only his second of the season in 56 games.
