Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Dominican Winter League

Delvi Cid (PR-LF, Aguilar Cibaenas): 0-for-1, K. Our old friend Delvi Cid got into the game as a pinch runner and then remained in the game. The Indians released him earlier this year and he hooked up with the Orioles and played for their High-A Frederick team (.252 AVG, .735 OPS). He has been out in the Dominican playing winter ball since the start, but has been limited to just 7 games played and the at bat in this game was his first official plate appearance the entire time he has been out there.

Erik Gonzalez (SS, Leones del Escogido): 2-for-4, 2 R, 3B, 3 RBI. Just another typical day in the neighborhood for Mr. Gonzalez who racked up a multi-hit game, an extra base hit, and three RBIs. Aguilar has received a ton of talk this offseason with his impressive showing in Venezuela, but Gonzalez’s showing may be more impressive just considering his experience level and lower expectations.

Carlos Santana (3B, Leones del Escogido): DNP. Santana did not play on Thursday night, but he is expected to make his winter ball debut and start at third base on Friday night. A lot of eyes will be watching him during this two-three week experimental period.

Puerto Rico Winter League

Tyler Sturdevant (RP, Criollos de Caguas): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Sturdevant came in and faced one batter and struck him out. This was his second outing of his winter ball campaign in Puerto Rico as he looks to make a comeback from shoulder surgery. In two games he has faced four batters and sent all four down and recorded one strikeout.

Venezuela Winter League

J.C. Ramirez (RP, Tiburones de la Guaira): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Ramirez came on and finished the game off pitching the ninth inning of an 8-2 win. His winter ball campaign just started last week and he has now made three total appearances where in 2.0 innings he has allowed 4 hits, 4 runs (2 earned), 3 walks and has 1 strikeout.

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-3, R, RBI, 2 BB. A nice day at the plate where even though Aguilar did not showcase the power he still showed a willingness to set the table and get on base as he reached base in 3 of his 5 plate appearances. His winter ball time is rapidly winding down as he just received word from the Indians that he has to shut down his season on December 28th.

tony, Chris Davis had some of the same problems as a texas ranger farm hand as Aquilar has and look at him now.
That isnt to say that jesus aquilar will ever do what chris davis did at baltimore but sometimes a light goes on in a player. Look at the traveling bags of batiste before he was at toronto sometimes players just start to get the picture clearer. Aquilar's numbers since april are quite impressive 140+ rbi's in 175 games is serious number!! i like every other informed indians fan am very anxious to see his in the spring and early season in c-bus to see if hecintinue the improvement. and i suspect you do too

Paulino is still being developed as a shortstop and will return to Lake County at that position next year. he's still a priority guy, and the hope is in his age 19 season he bounces back from a touch 18-year old season - though really - without the hype going in would have been considered a solid season for a young 18-year old in Low-A. We'd be very intrigued about such a showing.

Has Paulino been pushed back in this pecking order ? Though he had a down year at bat, he is still young and developing. Or are they looking at a position change for him ?

Anything is possible with Gonzalez because as a guy on the 40-man he is going to get some priority. That said, the Indians are developing him at shortstop.....and there will be a shortstop in Akron named Lindor who will block any promotion attempts for Gonzalez. Now, if Lindor does well, he could make his way to Columbus quite quickly.....which would then open up the possibility for Gonzalez, if he is developing and performing well, to move up to Akron. And of course Gonzo can always fill in at other infield positions if needed, but like I said, the focus is on developing him as an everyday shortstop so time at other positions should be limited.

Both Gonzalez and Aquilar having excellent winter seasons. Hope this growth will continue into SPT and into the minor league season in 14. If Gonzalez continues to improve do you see him ending up in Akron before the end of 14 season?

Hoping that Strudevant stays healthy and is able to get his command back in order to become a bullpen option for the Indians in 15.
