Around the Farm: December 10, 2013
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE (LVBP)
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, 1B): 3-for-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP. Now this is the RBI machine we're all used to watching!!! Aguilar's power numbers now stand at 16 HR and 45 RBI in 44 LVBP games this winter after he launched his 15th and 16th bombs of the season on Tuesday night. He really looks like he has caught his second wins and is finishing out the year strong. With about two and a half weeks left in the season, he has an outside shot of breaking the league's season home run record of 20. In an odd pairing, 42-year old first basemanAlex Cabrera has 18 homers and is also vying for the record.
DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LIDOM)
Ronny Rodriguez (Estrellas Orientales, PH): 0-for-0 (0 plate appearances). Ronny got announced into the game as a pinch hitter, but was pulled before taking a single pitch as the Cardenales de Lara brought in righty Victor Marteto replace left-hander Atahualpa Severino, thus leading the Estrellas to counter with the left-handed hitting Nelson Perez. This was his first appearance in a game since November 13th and he has yet to record an official plate appearance in a game since November 2nd, so he is clearly just an extra hanging around on the roster.
Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS): 2-for-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K. Gonzalez extends his hitting streak to six games and picks up his 14th RBI of the LIDOM season in his 40th game. However, his strikeout on the night puts his K:BB ratio up to an astronomical 14:1! Even for a power hitter, that's not a number you want to see and Gonzalez has only one home run on the LIDOM season. It is also interesting that Gonzalez is playing everyday and has 139 at bats in the league while the higher rated prospect Ronny Rodriguez has barely played and has just 20 at bats.
PUERTO RICAN WINTER LEAGUE (LBPRC)
Carlos Moncrief (Gigantes de Carolina, RF): 0-for-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K. Moncrief has followed up his recent three-game multi-hit streak with three nights in which he has gone a combined 1-for-13 (.077). This lack of consistency has been what has prevented his winter season numbers from being truly stellar and recovering from a poor start.
