SOUTH BEND - The Lake County Captains (21-20) won their three game series with the South Bend Silver Hawks (22-20) with a 4-2 win on Friday night.
Elvis Araujo (1-4, 2.40 ERA) pitched six strong innings to earn his first win of the season, only giving up five hits and one earned run. He surrendered one walk and he struck out six batters.
The Captains’ offense gave Araujo enough run support in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Alex Lavisky and second baseman Robel Garcia drew back-to-back walks from Silver Hawks starter J.R. Bradley. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo reached on a fielding error by Bradley on a sacrifice attempt. Left fielder Todd Hankins laced a no-out triple to center field to plate Lavisky, Garcia and Castillo. The Captains added one more run in the inning off a Bradley wild pitch.
Bradley (2-4, 5.25) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings. He gave up five walks and struck out two batters.
The South Bend bullpen combined to shutout the Captains over the final 4.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
Araujo gave up his only run of the game in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Ender Inciarte doubled to left field to lead off the inning. Right fielder Chris Ellison singled home Inciarte to make it a 4-1 game.
Reliever Rob Nixon replaced Araujo in the seventh inning. Nixon allowed a run in the eighth inning to make it a 4-2 game.
Shortstop Josh Parr beat out an infield single to lead off the eighth. He advanced to second on a passed ball by catcher Alex Monsalve. A throwing error by Monsalve moved Parr to third base with one out. Parr scored on a wild pitch by Nixon.
Nixon allowed one run (unearned) on one hit in two innings of work. He walked one and struck out two.
Jeff Johnson picked up his seventh save of the year with a shutout ninth inning. He yielded one walk but struck out two in the inning.
