Araujo, Captains win rain shortened game
July 3, 2012
EASTLAKE – The final game of the series between the Lake County Captains and Fort Wayne TinCaps was cut short due to rain for the second time in three days, giving Lake County the 2-1 win.
Left-hander Elvis Araujo (2-6, 4.72) took the wheel for the Captains on the mound against Fort Wayne’s Ruben Mejia (1-2, 3.89).
Catcher Alex Monsalve put the Captains on the board first with his seventh home run of the season during the second inning, but the TinCaps crafted a rebuttal immediately in the third.
With one out, centerfielder Travis Jankowski, the San Diego Padres’ 2012 first-round draft pick out of Stony Brook, tripled to left on a ball that snuck by the diving left fielder Zach MacPhee. Jankowski scored as shortstop Tyler Stubblefield singled to left, leveling the score at 1-1.
With the storm clouds closing in for the second time during the week, the Captains plated one more in the fourth to ensure the lead.
Right fielder Jordan Smith reached base on a one-out infield single and advanced to second as Monsalve drew a walk. Cue first baseman Jarrud Sabourin, who singled to left to plate Smith, pushing the Captains ahead 2-1.
That was enough for the Captains as the clouds let loose in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mother nature was too much for the Classic Park field and after a rain delay of just over an hour, the game was called.
After 4.5 innings, the game was ruled official, giving the Captains the 2-1 victory and Araujo his third win of the season.
Araujo’s final line ended at fiving innings pitched, surrendering five hits while striking out three. On the opposite side, Mejia went four innings allowing three hits and one walk while fanning five.
Tuesday’s game closed the book on the TinCaps for the Captains this season. Overall, the Captains and the TinCaps split the entire series against one another 6-6 and each team scored 41 runs.
Next, the Captains hit the road and travel to West Michigan to face the Whitecaps. Game one will feature the battle of the All-Stars as right-hander Joe Colon (6-8, 3.17) is scheduled to start against Whitecaps’ righty Tommy Collier (6-5, 2.29). Both starters were selected to the Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star team this year. Collier dominated the Captains earlier this season in Eastlake as he went the full nine innings and allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
