Akron sweeps twinbill over Bowie

Akron, OH – The Aeros took both games in their double header with the Bowie Baysox Saturday night, winning the first 3-2 and the second 6-1 in front of 5,594 fans at Canal Park.
In game one, Akron got the scoring started with a three run third inning. Right fielder Jordan Henry hit an RBI single to score Roberto Perez, and left fielder Nick Weglarz hit another RBI single with runners on second and third to give the Aeros a 3-0 lead.
Bowie responded in the fifth when catcher Caleb Joseph hit a sacrifice fly scoring Manny Machado, and cut the lead to 3-1. The Baysox made a late rally attempt in the seventh, scoring a run on another Joseph RBI single to make it 3-2, but wouldn’t score again.
TJ House started for the Aeros, but only went one inning after throwing yesterday before the rainout. Toru Murata and Rob Bryson combined for five innings pitched, gave up a combined four hits, and each struck out two. Preston Guilmet came on in the seventh to close and registered his 18th save of the year. Murata (2-1) received the win for the Aeros.
In game two, the Aeros used an explosive sixth inning and were aided by a quality start from Steven Wright to put away the Baysox 6-1.
With the game scoreless through three innings, the Aeros struck first with two runs in the fourth. Third baseman Ryan Rohlinger hit a clutch, two out RBI single that scored Thomas Neal and Juan Diaz to put the Aeros in the lead 2-0.
Bowie got on the scoreboard in the sixth when first baseman Rhyne Hughes hit a deep solo shot over the right field bleachers to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Aeros shut the door on any potential Baysox comeback in the sixth inning when they plated four runs. Juan Diaz started the inning with his 20th double of the season, and set the tone for the rest of the inning. The Aeros were aided by a throwing error from Bowie pitcher Pat Egan that kept the inning alive. Center fielder Tyler Holt hit an RBI single, and Jordan Henry executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to cap the inning for Akron and put them in the lead 6-1.
Akron’s Tyler Holt had three hits and an RBI in game two, and finished with four hits in the doubleheader.
Both teams combined for 14 hits on the night.
Akron starter Steven Wright (9-6) gave the Aeros a fantastic outing with six strong innings pitched. Wright gave up five hits, one run, and struck out four to notch his 9th win of the year.
Jose Flores, who was just called up from Carolina, made his AA debut as he came on to close the seventh inning for the Aeros and delivered with a perfect inning coming out of the bullpen.
With the sweep, Akron improves to a season high 65-42, while Bowie drops to 54-52. Akron now holds a 10-game lead over the second-place Baysox in the EL West, their largest margin of the season.
The Aeros and Baysox will conclude the series and homestand with a 1:05 PM game Sunday afternoon. LHP Rich Zagone (2-2, 3.32) will start for Bowie, while LHP Matt Packer (2-0, 1.35) will take the ball for Akron.
