Akron RubberDucks tally 16 hits in 12-6 loss to Binghamton Mets
(Akron, Ohio) June 11, 2014 – Binghamton second baseman Brian Burgamy socked a pair of three-run home runs, and finished with seven RBI Wednesday night, as the Binghamton Mets cruised to a 12-6 win over the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park.
With Akron suffering three-straight losses, and the Richmond Flying Squirrels defeating the Trenton Thunder Wednesday evening, the RubberDucks' lead in the EL West has been cut to a half-game. Akron has been in first place since May 2nd, and has led by as many as 5.5 games.
Both teams got off to a scoring start, but ultimately Binghamton opened up the game and scored in clusters while racking up three home runs. The 12 runs scored by the Mets is the most runs Akron has allowed in a game this season.
The first run of the game was scored by the Mets in the opening frame when Akron starter Toru Murata (4-2) issued two consecutive walks, with the second allowing Binghamton center fielder Kyle Johnson to cross home. As the Mets held an early 1-0 advantage with no outs and the bases loaded, Murata retired next three batters consecutively to avoid further damage.
Tyler Naquin started the fifth-straight game for Akron with a leadoff hit to push him to a 14-game hitting streak. Naquin has now recorded a hit in 22 of his last 23 games. To kick off his second and final rehab appearance with Akron, first baseman Nick Swisher clubbed a double to left field that brought home two runners, Naquin included. The two-run double put Akron ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
Swisher ended the night going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a single.
Burgamy launched the first of his two three-run homers to give Binghamton a 4-2 lead. The lead was later extended to 7-2 in the sixth inning after Burgamy's second homer.
With the help of a walk and an Akron error, Binghamton posted four more runs in the eighth to make it 11-2.
Four singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly helped Akron put up a fight and post three runs in the bottom of the eighth to help chip away at the deficit and bring the score to 11-5 . Ronny Rodriguez's RBI double closed out the RubberDucks' scoring in the ninth inning.
Binghamton starter Matt Bowman (4-4) picked up the win after seven innings of work where he allowed nine hits while only letting two across the plate. Bowman struck out seven batters and walked three.
Murata (7 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR) suffered the loss after throwing 5.1 innings.
The Akron RubberDucks and Binghamton Mets will close out the five-game series at Canal Park on Thursday at 7:05. p.m. RHP Joe Colon (5-3, 2.91) will make the start for the RubberDucks while the Mets will send RHP Greg Peavey(3-1, 3.56) to the mound.
