AKRON, Ohio – Following Tuesday’s postponement due to snow, the Akron RubberDucks split Wednesday’s frigid doubleheader with the Trenton Thunder, emerging victorious in game one before falling in game two.

With temperatures still sitting in the mid-30s, both offenses struggled to score runs, while the pitching staffs capitalized on the harsh conditions. Game one featured 15 hits through the scheduled seven-inning outing, but only two resulted in extra bases.

The Thunder struck first in the top half of the third when leadoff hitterMason Williams scored on a single to left field by designated hitterBen Gamel. The RubberDucks quickly answered with two runs in the bottom half thanks to a Joe Wendle RBI double and a sacrifice fly byBryson Myles.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, and first baseman Jake Lowery added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly that scored Giovanny Urshela. Trenton cut the lead to 4-3 in the final frame on an error by right fielderJordan Smith, but Giovanni Soto shut the door and earn his first save of the season.

Cody Anderson, the Indians organization Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2013, only lasted three innings and threw 60 percent of his pitches for strikes. The righty allowed one run on four hits and two walks. Francisco Valeraearned his first victory of 2014 by throwing two innings of one-run ball.  At the plate, Tyler Naquin finished the day with two hits and a run scored. Francisco Lindor went 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Wendle and Tyler Holteach added a double.

In game two, Trenton starting pitcher Zach Nuding threw a complete game two-hitter, surrendering just one walk and striking out five, leading the Thunder to a 1-0 victory.

RubberDucks starter Joseph Colon worked out of a few jams but ultimately took the loss. Colon gave up one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four. The righty out of Puerto Rico induced six groundball outs before giving way to relief pitcher Kyle Crockett. Crockett pitched one scoreless inning.

At the plate, Tyler Naquin and Alex Lavisky provided the only hits of the game for Akron, both singles.

With the loss, the RubberDucks dropped the series two games to one. Akron sits at 6-7 on the year while the victory brings Trenton to 7-6.

The RubberDucks are scheduled to open a three-game set with the Bowie Baysox Thursday with right-hander Will Roberts scheduled to take the mound. Roberts, a fifth-round selection in 2011, has made two starts in 2014 and sports a 4.09 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP on the year. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Md.
