(Reading, Pa.) June 18, 2014 – When Akron righthander Joe Colonpitches against the Reading Fightin Phils, good things seem to happen.

Colon tossed a complete-game shutout against Reading on May 26th at Canal Park. On Wednesday evening, Colon faced the Fightins again, and this time allowed just two runs over eight innings and walked away with a 4-3 victory in the middle game of a three-game series at First Energy Stadium.

The RubberDucks (41-30) won for the second straight game, and increased their lead in the EL West to 1 1⁄2 games over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, who lost at Binghamton, 6-1.

Although held to just five hits on the night, Akron made the most of them, slugging three solo home runs. After Joe Wendle delivered a first-inning, RBI double, Jake Lowery made it 2-0 with a solo shot in the second off Reading starter Jesse Biddle (3-8). Anthony Gallas clubbed an opposite-field homer in the sixth, and Francisco Lindorfollowed suit in the eighth, lining one out to left.

Colon (6-4) retired 13 consecutive hitters at one juncture, and did not allow a run until a solo homer by Zach Collier in the fifth, which made it 2-1. After that, Colon sung for his supper, working around jams in the sixth, seventh and eighth. He gave up a run in the sixth to make it 3-2, but wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam by getting a double-play grounder from Kelly Dugan. He then stranded two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth to conclude his outing.

Tyler Sturdevant inherited a 4-2 lead in the ninth, and gave up a run on a walk, a single, and a one-out, RBI single to make it 4-3. He then took a page from Colon’s book, and induced a double-play grounder by Pete Lavin to end the game. It was Sturdevant’s seventh save. He has converted all seven of his save chances.

Wendle was 2-3, in the game and has gone 11-17 (.647), over his last four games.

The RubberDucks and Fightin Phils will meet in the series finale on Thursday night at 7:05. RHP Will Roberts (6-7, 3.82) will oppose Reading’s RHP Severino Gonzalez (4-7, 5.07). The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
