(Richmond, Va.) July 8, 2014 – Richmond third baseman Mario Lisson doubled, homered and drove in five runs Tuesday night, leading the Flying Squirrels to a 9-4 win over the Akron RubberDucks at The Diamond.

Lisson, a 29-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, smacked a two-run double in the third inning as the Squirrels built a 4-0 lead, and then put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the fifth to make it 8-1. Both of Lisson’s big hits came off Akron starterDuke von Schamann (3-4).

Named to the EL West All-Star team on Monday, Lisson raised his RBI total to 52, and helped the Flying Squirrels (54-37) even this series between the top two teams in the EL West Division at a game apiece. Akron fell back to three games behind the Squirrels in the division race.

It was a particularly tough night for von Schamann, who gave up eight hits and eight runs in four innings. He faced four batters in the fifth without recording an out. The Lisson homer chased von Schamann from the game. During a three-run third inning, von Schamann complicated things with a pair of wild pickoff throws that allowed Richmond runners to move first to third. It was the fourth straight losing decision for von Schamann, who came to the Indians organization in a trade with the Dodgers during the first week of the regular season.

The RubberDucks (51-40) had trouble getting any traction against righthander Austin Fleet (6-1), who worked 5 1/3 innings and struck out seven. Francisco Lindor finally broke the scoring drought, and drove in Cody Ferrell with a double in the fifth to make it 4-1.

In the sixth, with Richmond leading 8-1, Fleet walked Adam Abraham and Anthony Gallas with one out. He was lifted in favor of hard-throwing lefty Josh Osich, who promptly gave up a base hit to center to Jake Lowery. Abraham was getting the stop sign at third, but first baseman Ricky Oropesa caught the throw from the outfield and fired toward second trying to get Gallas rounding the bag. The throw was wild, however, and rolled almost to the centerfield fence, allowing all three runners, including Lowery, to circle the bases and make it 8-4.

The RubberDucks made one last gasp in the eighth, loading the bases on three consecutive walks, but side-arm specialist Phil McCormick induced a pop-up and double play to retire the side.

The RubberDucks and Squirrels will play game three of the series on Wednesday evening at 7:05. RHP Joe Colon(8-4, 2.63) will start for the RubberDucks, and LHP Kelvin Marte (7-3, 3.78) is the announced starter for Richmond. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
