(Akron, Ohio) July 23, 2014 – Richmond starter Austin Fleet stole the show in Wednesday afternoon’s contest between the Flying Squirrels and the Akron RubberDucks, throwing eight shutout innings in a 2-0 victory at Canal Park.

In his eight shutout innings, Fleet (8-1) allowed five hits and struck out four to earn the win. It is his second victory over Akron (57-48) this season. Out of his 111 pitches, 82 were strikes.

Richmond (63-41) starters hurled 18 innings overall on the series, and did not give up a run. With the loss, the Ducks continue their longest losing streak of the season, now tallying at seven games.

Shawn Morimando (1-1) made his third start with the RubberDucks, allowing only two hits and one run in his six innings. Although he was charged with the loss, the lefty allowed just one unearned run in the first inning. In his first three Double- A starts, Morimando has an ERA of 1.00.

Akron reliever Giovanni Soto made his second consecutive two-inning appearance, allowing just one hit. In his last six outings, Soto has thrown 9 1/3 scoreless innings.

With a single in the fourth, Jordan Smith extended his hitting streak to 10 games, a season best for the centerfielder. Smith went 1-4 in the game, and had 13 hits during the homestand.

An Akron error in the first inning helped set up an RBI groundout by Richmond’s Matt Duffy in the first inning, giving the Squirrels a 1-0 lead. An RBI by Angel Villalona tacked on Richmond’s second, and final, run in the ninth, extending their lead to 2-0.

The Akron RubberDucks will travel to Reading, PA Thursday to begin a four-game series against the Fightin Phils. Righty Jordan Cooper (6-2) will start for Akron, and right-hander Ryan O’Sullivan (4-5) will take the mound for the Fightin. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
