The Great Lakes Loons took an early 3-0 lead and make it stick in a 4-2 win over the Lake County Captains on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. Lake County dropped their second straight ballgame. The Captains left nine men on base for a total of 20 in the two games in the series.
The Carolina Mudcats fell to the Salem Red Sox to lose the series. A disastrous sixth inning would lead to the Mudcats loss as the Sox put up eight runs in the inning all of which came with two outs in the inning.
First baseman Russ Canzler fell just a triple short of the cycle going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while starter T.J. McFarland held the Tribe scoreless over the first five frames and went on to scatter eight hits over 6.2 solid innings to help the Columbus Clippers hold off the Indianapolis Indians 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.
With two weeks full of thoughts after "the man" tried to hold our friendly neighborhood co-editor down, Jim Pete breaks out part two of this week's Corner of Carnegie and Ontario, as he takes a look at a potential new beginning for the Indians in 2012. Might the dam break this winter, with a series of trades and releases that change the face of the franchise forever? Are we ready for the Kipnis and Chisenhall era?
The Indians have seen their season take a serious nosedive from quasi-contender in late-July to league doormat in late-August. The fall has been swift and hard, one that has not been seen in Cleveland in a long time, if ever. Tony chimes in with his thoughts on CEO Paul Dolan's comments this week and also discusses Matt LaPorta's final chance with the Indians, the future of Grady Sizemore and Josh Tomlin, and more.
The streak is finally over! The Indians would need just four hits against rival New York on Saturday night to snap their second nine game losing streak of the season, defeating the Yankees 3-1 picking up just their fifth victory in the month of August. Tribe starter Justin Masterson became the first Cleveland starter with double-digit victories in 2012, giving his team another quality and dominant start.
Dorssys Paulino rolled out his first really big game at short-season Mahoning Valley, but was overwhelmed by Mudcats, who dominated ATF on Saturday night with a variety of show-stoppers. Which topped the list: a seven-inning, seven K gem, a two-homer game, or a guy who managed to play every position on the diamond? Join Jim Pete as he "Tooles" Around the Farm...after the jump...
The Great Lakes Loons held the Lake County Captains to six hits, all singles in the series opener on Saturday night. Lake County left 11 runners on base throughout the game. Lake County is still tied with Fort Wayne for the first wild-card position.
Akron shortstop Ryan Rohlinger had two hits, including a two-RBI single, as the Aeros beat the Trenton Thunder, 4-3, Saturday night at Canal Park. After losing the first two games of the best-of-four series against Trenton, the Aeros won just their second game in their last six.
The Carolina Mudcats behind a great start from Jordan Cooper took the second game of the series from the Salem Red Sox 4-2. Cooper tossed seven scoreless innings in which he allowed six hits while striking out six. He has allowed no runs in his last two starts, spanning a total of 12 innings.
The Indians say goodbye to another old friend this week, as it certainly looks like Grady Sizemore is gone for good...or is he? There may be more goodbyes before the 2013 season...and a potential hello as well. Join me on the Corner of Carnegie and Ontario, as we we continue to hate the Yankees, and hope for the best...
Another week of transactions is behind us and the pace of roster movement has not slowed down at all. Notable call-ups include Cole Cook getting the call to AA, Dorssys Paulino making the transition to playing in front of fans, and Matt LaPorta getting yet another crack (his last?) at the big leagues.
