Dillon Howard started the first game of two seven inning ball games on Sunday night and pitched one of his better game in the AZL thus far. The Indians lost the first game 2-1 but rebounded in the second game to beat the Padres 7-3.
There is really not a lot more that can be said about the Indians fall of late. It has been rough to watch, and has really made a lot of people question the Tribe. I think the biggest non story that this rough stretch has brought to my attention has been how Jason Kipnis has been awful since May. He was merely below average in June, but has been horrid since then.
It was another defensive struggle on Sunday evening, but this time the Columbus Clippers came out on top against the Norfolk Tides by a final score of just 1-0.
Dillon Howard had a decent outing on the night, and while it wasn't stellar, it was better than his mostly drab outings so far in 2012. Roberto Hernandez struck out nine against only one walk, but gave up four home runs. Jerrud Sabourin racked up another two-hit ballgame, and Jordan Smith hit his sixth homer on the season. The Indians beat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers on July 26th in their most stirring victory of the season. It gave them a 7-3 record against the Tigers, and gave them the springboard to start their first major win streak of the season. Of course, they then lost eight in a row. The Indians lost their seventh game in a row, and are now 8 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox. Their run differential is the worst in the American League (fourth worst in all of baseball, behind Houston, Colorado and Miami) right now at a crazy -88 runs, and the big league club is beginning to look a lot like the Columbus Clippers did back in April. The Lake County Captains jumped out to an early lead over the South Bend Silver Hawks and could not hold on as the bullpen gave up the winning run in the ninth inning. The Captains fell to the Silver Hawks 7-6.
The Columbus Clippers were completely shut down offensively on Saturday night as they fell to the Norfolk Tides by a final score of 3-1. The Clippers mustered only four hits on the night, and their lone run came on a solo home run by second baseman Cord Phelps in the fourth inning.
The Scrappers rolled into Troy, New York on Saturday night to square off against the best team in the New York-Penn League, the Tri-City ValleyCats. Despite collecting the same number of hits, the ValleyCat offense was more productive than the Scrappers, leading Tri-City to an 8-3 victory.
The Carolina Mudcats offense was absolutely stagnant on Saturday Night, as the Lynchburg Hillcats overwhelmed the Muddies 10-2. Carolina took an early lead, but were unable to hold it, as they fell to one game over .500 in the second half of the season.
The AZL Indians are loaded for bear with offense right now, and while the league is clearly skewed in that direction, there are several interesting prospects that lit it up on Saturday Night.
