Paolo Espino (Photo: Lianna Holub)Aeros run rampant, complete sweep of Thunder
The Akron Aeros stole a season-high five bases as they went on to sweep the Trenton Thunder in a three-game series winning the finale 7-4 Thursday at Waterfront Park.
Akron (58-54) also stole five bases May 11 at Erie. Three of those five bases were stolen by Juan Diaz, which is a 2011 high.
Josh Judy (Photo: Lianna Holub)The Indians have had over a half dozen players make their Major League debuts this year, and for the most part they have all performed well. Right-handed pitcher Alex White, second baseman Jason Kipnis, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, second baseman Cord Phelps, right-handed pitcher Zach McAllister, and outfielder Ezequiel Carrera have all made their debuts this season.
Cory Burns (Photo: Lianna Houb)Burns becomes Aeros single-season saves leader
Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns surpassed Randy Newsom as the Akron Aeros single-season saves leader notching his franchise best 30th save of 2011 in the teams 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder in game two of a three-game set Wednesday at Waterfront Park.
Newsom’s mark of 29 saves stood for three seasons.
Ryan MerrittAccording to Baseball America senior writer Jim Callis, the Indians have signed 16th round pick left-handed pitcher Ryan Merritt for $150K. He likely will be assigned to Arizona where he can start working out and ramp up his pitching so he can throw in games at the end of the year in the Arizona League or in Instructional League in the fall.
