Welcome back everyone to this week’s Diamonds in Single-A. Over the last two weeks, this area has looked first at a starting pitcher and then a hitter, so this week’s focus will be on a middle reliever.
As every Indians fan this year is painfully aware, you can never have enough middle men in baseball, and while they tend to get ignored as prospects they are a very important part of building...

Kinston had a scheduled off day.
Paw Sox blast Columbus
The Pawtucket Red Sox showed no mercy on the Clippers, pounding out twenty hits in a 9-1 win over Columbus on Monday.
The Sox wasted no time as Chip Ambres scored on a single by Chris Carter and Carter scored on a Paul McAnulty first inning double. With two outs in the second, Sean Danielson doubled and Jonathan Van Every...

As I noted yesterday, RHP Michael Finocchi has been released. RHP Randy Newsom has been moved back to Double-A Akron to take his roster spot. Also, OF Stephen Head was placed on the Triple-A Columbus disabled list. RHP Jack Cassel was re-activated and newly signed RHP Blaine Neal took Head and Newsom's roster spots.

For the second time this season Eastern North Carolina Native Lonnie Chisenhall is the Carolina League Player of the Week. The West Carteret High School alum had another monster week, hitting .533 (16-30), with two home runs, 12 RBI, 12 runs scored and a slugging percentage of .900. This is the second time this year Chisenhall is the Carolina League Player of the Week. He first grabbed the honor for...

As I noted in yesterday's Minor Happenings, I am heading out to Miami, FL this Wednesday and will be there through Sunday, so there will be some changes this week. For one, there will be no Minor Happenings this week, and also no Smoke Signals radio show either. Both will return next Thursday May 21st.
If anyone still needs their prospect radio fix, I will be appearing on the Minor League Baseball...

The South Atlantic League announced today that Captains starting pitcher T.J. McFarland has been named South Atlantic League pitcher of the week for the week of May 4th through the 10th.

Clippers beat Pawtucket
The Clippers withstood four innings from Daisuke Matsuzaka and beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 4-1 in front of a capacity Mother's Day crowd at Huntington Park. Pawtucket gave Matsuzaka a quick lead when the second batter of the game, Jonathan Van Every, hit a Zach Jackson pitch over the right field wall for a solo home run.
In the fifth inning, Pawtucket replaced...

Nothing official at the moment, but with the Indians signing RHP Luis Vizcaino today he is expected to either join the Indians in Cleveland or go to Triple-A Columbus. With that, a roster spot needed to be opened up in Columbus, whether it is Vizcaino going there or whoever is optioned out from Cleveland going there. I am hearing the Indians cleared roster room in Columbus by sending RHP Randy Newsom...

Minor Happenings: Indians Should Regret Stevens Trade
"Minor Happenings" covers the important developments and news in the Indians farm system. While most of the information in this report is from my own research and through interviews I have conducted with organizational personnel, some information in this report is collected and summarized from the various news outlets that cover each team.
As noted earlier in the week, Minor Happenings was delayed...

Clippers snap losing skid
The Clippers snapped a six game losing streak with a 7-2 defeat of the Pawtucket Red Sox. Clippers starter Kirk Saarloos pitched seven strong innings and Columbus scored six runs in the sixth inning to get the win.
Saarloos allowed only two hits, including a Paul McAnulty solo home run off the scoreboard in right center in the fourth inning to tie the game...

Clippers Shutout 4-0
Columbus was shutout 4-0 on Friday night after a strong starting pitching performance from Pawtucket's Clay Buchholz who went 7.1 innings of shutout ball allowing just 2 hits, 1 walk and striking out 8.
Right-hander Tomo Ohka kept Columbus in the game with another quality start going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, no walks and had 4 strikeouts. John Meloan...

Well, remember that "mid-level starting pitching prospect from Double-A" that Shapiro talked about on Wednesday that they were considering for a bullpen role? Looks like RHP Frank Herrmann was that guy, though he may not be the only one. Herrmann was moved up to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, but he has not taken over the starting duties as expected for departed starter Jeremy Sowers. Instead,...

Captains swept in double-header
The Clippers continued the recent history of struggles against the Norfolk Tides in double-header sweep Thursday afternoon, falling 5-2 and 4-3.
David Huff (4-1 4.05), pitching from behind in the count most of the day, found a way out. He allowed two runs in the first inning, but followed by retiring ten consecutive batters.
The Clippers tied...
