AKRON- The cloudy skies throughout the day could not prevent the Akron Aeros from blasting off on Friday night. Thanks to a big third inning, and an even bigger seventh, the Aeros secured their fourth straight victory with a win against the Portland SeaDogs by a final score of 12-3.
Eric Haase may be from “The State Up North”, but his dedication rests within the Buckeye State. Haase hails from Westland, Michigan, just east of Ann Arbor. Though he’s from the land of blue and maize, he had plans to move to the land of scarlet and grey his senior year of high school. That was put on hold, though, after he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2011. Stephanie Metzger spoke with Haase recently about playing in Lake County, his decision to leave Michigan, and much more.
With their 9th round pick in the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected left-handed pitcher Thomas Pannone out of the College of Southern Nevada.
With their 7th round pick in the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected left-handed pitcher Kenny Mathews out of Riverside Community College (CA).
Day 2 of the 2013 MLB Draft kicks up at 12:30 today. There will be no live running blog like yesterday and instead - as in years past - we will be posting draft capsules for every player drafted today within minutes of the pick. NOTE: These capsules will not post to the front page, so to see them you will need to click on the "News" tab located to the upper left below the site header or the link in the "Newswire" to the right.
The Indians selected prep outfielder Clint Frazier with their first pick last night, and it is a pick that Tony is very excited about. Unlike the selection of Tyler Naquin last season who many felt was a reach and he did not have much prospect sizzle, Frazier has all the glitz and sex appeal people look for in a first round pick. In his Day 1 recap, Tony shares his thoughts on the pick, provides commentary from Brad Grant on the pick, and even provides Frazier’s reaction to the selection as well. Also, with the help of Jeff Ellis he previews Day 2 with the top 10 players to keep an eye on at the start of round three where the Indians have the fifth overall pick.
Call to the Bullpen returns to the Cyberwaves tonight for a special MLB draft edition. Jake and Hayden will recap this year's Indians draft picks and discuss the future of first round pick Clint Frazier. In addition, they'll talk about Asdrubal Cabrera going to the disabled list and Chris Perez running into trouble with the law. It all goes live tonight at 10 p.m.!
The Cleveland Indians begin a three-game series tonight against the Detroit Tigers. While it's only June, the series could prove pivotal as the Indians trail the Tigers by 2 1/2 games and have now gone 4-12 in their last 16 games. Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound for the Tribe tonight in what could be the closest thing to a must-win series that a team can have in June. Jimenez has been impressive as of late, but can that continue tonight? And will it continue over the course of the season? Join the IBI's Steve Orbanek as he tackles that question in the latest edition of Orbiting Cleveland.
On a day when everyone will be talking about the Indians’ new 18-year-old wunderkind Walt “Clint” Frazier, I elected to set aside this edition of Second Thoughts as a tribute to one of the least discussed—and yet most reliable—members of the current Tribe roster. For five years now, this Ohio native has done his job here in Cleveland with escalating efficiency. Join Andrew Clayman as he gives some day-off Second Thoughts on the combination of reasons both rational and perplexing as to why Joe Smith is consistently neglected.
For the second straight night, the Wilmington Blue Rocks surged ahead by five, only to hold on for a 6-4 win against the Carolina Mudcats. Carolina (20-39) finished with two wins in their seven-game road trip. Cody Anderson (5-3) tossed his shortest outing of the year for the Mudcats, allowing four runs on six hits in only three innings of work. It was the first time in 12 starts that the right-hander failed to make it through five.
