It's a new year, a time when goals and resolutions are made. And while some are planning a new exercise and weight-loss regimen or aiming to get that big promotion at work, Terry Francona and his crew at Progressive Field are setting their sights higher as they hope to push their way to the next level as a ball-club coming off a year where they got a brief taste of postseason play. The IBI's Jake Dungan lists goals for the Tribe in 2014. Quintessential

The DWL playoffs began this past week, and to the surprise of many, the Indians' Carlos Santana was a participant. Santana had been manning the hot corner for Leones del Escogido this winter, but it now appears as if that has changed. Midway through the first playoff game, Santana was moved from third base to first base, and he has remained there ever since. Could it be that the Carlos Santana third base experiment is coming to an end? Join the IBI's Steve Orbanek as he touches on that and more in the latest edition of the Winter Ball Notebook.

The winter leagues in the Latin American countries provide an opportunity for players to play in more games and for Latin American players to play baseball in their home country. It gives some upper level minor league players a stage to showcase their talents and other players a chance to make up lost innings or at bats. In a piece that originally posted this time two years ago, the IBI's Tony Lastoria re-posts this piece with a few updates on the Winter Ball Experience for American players.

The Cleveland Indians have been protecting Danny Salazar over the years since he has returned from Tommy John surgery. Many questioned why the Front Office has handled him with such kid gloves for such a long period, that is, until he joined the Indians in August and started throwing 100 MPH. Join Jim Pete as he tackles this week's power poll: Will Danny Salazar be a top-of-the-rotation ace, or will he regress?

Before the 2013 season, the last impact starting pitcher Cleveland's farm system produced was Roberto Hernandez way back in 2007. Every elite-level starting pitcher since then was acquired from outside of the organization. That all changed in 2013 when Danny Salazar burst onto the scene. What Salazar did in his 10 regular season starts was nothing short of amazing. Jim Piascik delves into the numbers to show you just how amazing and what to expect from the right-hander in 2014.

So far this offseason, while the rest of baseball has been consumed with 10-year contracts, posting fees and blockbuster trades, the Indians have been hard at work finding value on the market without breaking the bank. Chris Antonetti has thus far done an adequate job at combing the available arms for starting pitching and bullpen help. Have they been blockbuster moves? No, but the IBI's Jake Dungan says not to be quick to overlook the minor league signings.

With everyone wrapping up their Christmas shopping today and tomorrow, the Indians themselves appear to have completed most of their shopping list this offseason with the pickups of David Murphy, John Axford, Josh Outman and Shaun Marcum. The Cleveland Indians seem to be addressing all of their needs this offseason, even if they aren't using big dollars to do it. There aren't many questions remaining on the 25-man roster, but one that is glaring is the #5 starter. Today's IBI Power Poll will take a look at just that question. It could be a bigger question than you think. Last season, Scott Kazmir broke camp as the Indians' #5 starter. Who will it be this year? Join Jim Pete with your #5 starting options.

Asdrubal Cabrera was an All-Star in 2011 and 2012, yet when Cleveland finally made the playoffs in 2013, the shortstop had arguably the worst season of his career. Jim Piascik breaks down why Cabrera struggled offensively in 2013 and whether the shortstop can bounce back in 2014.

It's December 20, and there still has been hardly a whisper heard about Ubaldo Jimenez? The starting pitching market has been slow to develop, and there are no signs as to where Jimenez may ultimately land. The big right-hander played a key role in the Indians' 2013 postseason berth, and it seems probable that he could still re-sign with Cleveland. Join the IBI's Steve Orbanek as he chimes in on why the Indians need to re-sign Jimenez in the latest edition of Orbiting Cleveland.
