Kazmir's dominance, Swisher's slam lead Indians to 8-1 win
Scott Kazmir struck out 12 batters in six innings and Nick Swisher hit a grand slam as the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Mets 8-1 in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Progressive Field. With the win, the Indians have won three games in a row as they continue their push toward a playoff spot and continue to strengthen their standing in the wildcard race.

Orbiting Cleveland: Yan Gomes, superstar?
Of all the Indians' offseason acquisitions, Yan Gomes has arguably had the most unexpected impact. He was initially thought to be an afterthought in the Esmil Rogers trade, but he has since cemented himself as key member of the Tribe's roster. Gomes has been so good, in fact, that he could be on his way to becoming a Major League everyday catcher. But could his ceiling even be higher? Do the Indians have a potential star on their hands? The IBI's Steve Orbanek ponders that notion in this week's edition of Orbiting Cleveland.

Second Thoughts: Starting Pitching and a pennant race
The offensive struggles and upside have been fairly well profiled. Beating a dead horse is one that we are attempting to avoid at least to the best of our ability, but perhaps the most pressing question is not whether the offense will bounce back - because it will - but rather can this rotation hold together for twenty-three more games. The IBI's Michael Hattery takes a look at that question in an off day edition of Second Thoughts...

A three year Indians review: The Starting Rotation
Next up in the three year review series are the starting pitchers. The IBI's Jeff Ellis handled this group on the whole and used some advanced stats to try and show how things have changed for the Indians than in previous years. At the start of the year he felt this was a weak link unit for the Indians and they would ultimately fail because of it, but their showing to date is impressive and bodes well for the future.

Trend Spotting: The Cowboy returns and the '14 fifth starter
The last month of baseball, especially while the Indians remain on the fringes, has a collection of interesting storylines or players who are worth monitoring. Compelling, because some players are auditioning or beginning their audition for their place on the 2014 Indians. The IBI's Michael Hattery looks at one of those players, the forgotten soldier Josh Tomlin, and how his appearances this month could set him up to have a more vital role in 2014.

Second Thoughts Game #139: Orioles 4, Indians 6
For only the second time since August 17th the Indians offense scored more than five runs. Led by Yan Gomes, Jason Kipnis, Mike Aviles, and Ryan Raburn the team tallied ten hits in the rubber game of a huge three game set against the Baltimore Orioles. This was the team’s last chance to deliver a loss to one of their wildcard competitors and the team’s offense responded with a big performance. The IBI's Michael Goodman shares his second thoughts on the important win...

Indians win three-game series with Orioles, rally for 6-4 win
There would be no need to sacrifice a live chicken to give the Tribe a victory Wednesday night. Before the rubber match against the Orioles, the team got an unexpected September call-up from the farm. Reliever Cody Allen and other members of the bullpen brought in a chicken to try and keep the team loose. That and some timely hitting and good bullpen work led to an important 6-4 win for the Indians.

Living in the moment is hard at the Corner of Carnegie & Ontario
Ubaldo Jimenez. Just saying the name for me brings up a small dose of bile in my throat. You know the guy I'm talking about. He's the former Rockies' ace that threw a no-hitter, and hit 96 at will with his 12 different pitches. He's just not that guy anymore, and perhaps that's not a bad thing at all. Join Jim Pete at the Corner of Carnegie and Ontario as he tries to rationalize Ubaldo Jimenez for the pitcher he is, and not the pitcher he was.

Second Thoughts Game #138: Orioles 3, Indians 4
10-9 with a 3.79 ERA. Would you believe me if I told you these stats belong to Ubaldo Jimenez? The same guy who lost 14 games in 2012 and hasn’t failed to get his ERA below five since arriving in Cleveland. Well, on Tuesday night, the right-hander pitched six shutout innings to earn his 10th win of the season. Join the IBI's Jake Dungan as he gives his thoughts on another crucial win by the Tribe in their wild card chase.

Jimenez, Indians edge past Orioles, 4-3
The Cleveland Indians needed someone to step up big time on Tuesday night, and thankfully Ubaldo Jimenez did just that. The big right-hander allowed no runs across six innings of work to lead the Indians to a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Join the IBI's Jim Berdysz as he provides all the details and play-by-play from the crucial Tribe win.

Second Thoughts Game #137: Orioles 7, Indians 2
After salvaging the final game of what was still a brutal road trip, the Indians returned home to kick off yet another crucial series. The mild buzz from finally beating the Tigers and returning home with their best starter on the mound was quickly blown, however, as Justin Masterson left the game abruptly. As a result, the bullpen was put in a tough spot, while the offense sleepwalked through another game and the Indians lost 7-2.

Masterson leaves with injury as Indains fall to O's, 7-2
On a holiday dedicated to the working world, the Indians themselves took a day off on the field. The struggling Tribe offense was at it again Monday, scoring just two runs to drop the first of a three-game series with the Orioles, 7-2. The heart of Tribe fans also skipped a beat when ace Justin Masterson left the ballgame in the second inning due to soreness in his left rib cage. Join IBI Indians beat reporter Jim Berdysz as he recaps another frustrating loss on Labor Day.

Notes From the Wigwam: Divisional race effectively ends
The Cleveland Indians just endured a very difficult week as the team went 1-5 to fall to 7.5 games back in the American League Central Division. Despite the poor performance, the Indians remain very much alive in the AL Wild Card race as the team is just 3.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays. Could this be the week that the Tribe begins its playoff push? Join the IBI's Steve Orbanek as he looks back at the week that was in his weekly Indians notebook, Notes From the Wigwam.

Second Thoughts Game #136: Indians 4, Tigers 0
Much needed? You could say that again. For more than a week now, the Tribe had been looking for that one big hit from the struggling Cleveland offense. Deadlocked in a scoreless tie in the ninth inning Sunday, they finally got that hit with one swing of the bat from third baseman Mike Aviles. Join IBI's Jim Berdysz as he shares his second thoughts on a huge Tribe victory.
