While much of the news centered around the MLB Winter Meetings this week, Indians players continue to hone their craft in the various winter leagues. In this week's Winter Ball Notebook, the IPI's Steve Orbanek touches on the selection of VWL standout Hector Rondon in the Rule 5 Draft as well as slumping slugger Carlos Santana. The winter meetings are over and everyone has gone home. The Indians were very active on the free agent and trade fronts, but were unable to come away from the meetings with any new acquisitions in tow. But the offseason continues on, and the Indians are clearly looking to sign both Nick Swisher and Kevin Youkilis and trade Asdrubal Cabrera.

Day four of the winter meetings is almost in the books. The news and rumors are winding down as people have already began departing Nashville, but the activity should continue through most of the rest of today. There is a lot of buzz in the winter meetings that the Indians could deal All Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for a collection of young talent to impact the roster in other areas of need next season. Jeff Ellis thinks the Indians should capitalize on Cabrera's value while it is at its peak as his career path is eerily similar to another former All Star middle infielder for the Indians who put up good seasons but battled conditioning issues before his career fell off a cliff.

Yesterday was the non-tender deadline and Cleveland had to make some difficult choices. The team chose not to tender contracts to Jack Hannahan, Rafael Perez, and Chris Seddon, letting them go into free agency. Additionally, it was announced that Corey Kluber had right knee surgery after injuring himself during the offseason.

The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have claimed first baseman Mike McDade off outright waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Indians made room on the 40-man roster by designating left-handed pitcher Chris Seddon for assignment.
